About

My teaching approach:

I specialize in straight-forward lessons geared specifically toward the student's particular interests; whether you want to learn how to play your favorite songs, learn all the skills to play with a band, or study music theory and advanced songwriting techniques. I attended Berklee in Boston and have a BA in Music. I have taught all levels and ages of student for 18 years, and currently play many different kinds of live gigs, as well as recording session work. Electric and acoustic, 6 and 12-string, standard, baritone, and bass guitar.

My influences are:

Brian Setzer, James Burton, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Angus Young, Lindsey Buckingham, Scotty Moore, Danny Gatton, Albert Lee, Pete Anderson, Clarence White, Brad Paisley, The Beatles, The Eagles, Django Reinhardt, etc., etc.!

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home

Guitar Lessons with me take place in the following areas:

Students homes in the San Fernando Valley, Hollywood to West Side LA/Santa Monica

Guitar Techniques:

Guidance In Equipment Selection, Recording and Production, Song Writing, Scales and Exercises, Music Theory, Reading Music, Jamming Skills, Improvisation, Performance, Vocal Accompaniment, Slide Guitar, Fingerstyle, Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

I have the student show me how much they currently know, to assess where we need to start. For beginner kids, I usually get them started reading music out of an instructional book. For beginner teens-adults, I don't generally have them work with a book right away (unless they really want to learn to read music), I usually start them off with some chords and exercises to improve coordination, and get them working on playing a song they like ASAP

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

It depends on the student's experience and natural abilities, but I build the curriculum based on each individual's goals - whether you want to learn to simply play your favorite songs, learn to write your own songs, learn what it takes to play with a band, and/or learn the skills to be able to jump on stage and jam with any band and more than hold your own, with no previous rehearsal! I focus on what YOU are interested in learning.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

Someone who is really excited to be learning to play guitar, puts in good practice time every week, improves weekly (I don't care if it's slow, gradual improvement, as long as they're moving forward!), and asks lots of questions! I love when a student asks any questions, be it about music theory, guitar gear, songwriting, playing techniques, soloing, etc.
