What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically start by showing students the primary colors of music. The 1st, 4th, and 5th degree of the major scale. There's only 7 notes, so simple music theory is as easy as counting on your left hand.
Then I explain how once you learn one single "1-4-5 song", you basically know a milllion songs.
“1-4-5” is “1+1=2” for music. There is no easier way to start off playing your favorite songs. Any other method is over complicated. IMHO today’s music school programs are obsolete, boring, and expensive.
Reading music is nice, but it’s not necessary to jam your favorite songs with friends. Music = FUN. Schools should teach 1-4-5 and the 1st song taught should be Johnny B. Goode or You Are My Sunshine. ☺
Why take 3 months to learn 3 song, or painstakingly learn how to read music when you could learn 10000000 FUN songs in 5 minutes?
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Since I was 15, I have always been interested in learning songs, scales, arpeggios, tricks, theory, etc. The interest never really drifted.
There's always a new layer of the onion to peel back. And since I learned the hard way... I can simplify it for students.
The center of my lessons is really... keeping it simple. As they say... "Give a woman a fish and she eats for a day, teach her to fish and she eats for a lifetime".
Keep it simple, learn the basics, and you'll have friends to jam with across the world. Oh and of course... tap that foot.

I do. I start of with 5 different strumming and fingerpicking patterns over a simple 1-4-5 chord progression. So in the key of A.... the other two "magic chords" are D and E.
Applying different everyday rythym patterns gives the student the power to jam with folks within weeks.
Just like basketball, you gotta learn to dribble. Once you can dribble... you're in the game! Same with learning a couple basic rythym patters over 1-4-5 songs. It gets you... in the game.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching in my 20s. It was a way to make some extra money but also an excuse to share something that I love.... the gift of music.
What types of students have you worked with?
I teach kids, adults, and adults that think their kids.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a student breakthrough with the simple ideas I mentioned above. Now she goes to bluegrass jams in town and is starting to learn some blues rhythm patterns so she can go to blues jams around town.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Dont let someone confuse you with complex theory, reading music, or complicated songs.
Learn one simple 1-4-5 song... and boooom.... you know a million songs.
