About
Meeting the student where they are and helping them along the path of their musical journey has always been my #1 goal. I have have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Music & Jazz Studies, and have been teaching for 30 years both privately and at the collegiate level. I teach a variety of methods geared towards students that want to be either great classical musicians, or pop musicians, or jazz musicians (or all three) and work with a variety of spectrums including autism and dyslexia. I use a mix of music theory, notation practice, and ear and rhythm training to help students become literate musicians who are prepared for whatever they wish to pursue musically after they leave my tutelage.

Jonny has been my piano teacher for the past two years. I am a 75+ year “young” adult. Despite having many years of classical piano training in my youth, I lacked the understanding/knowledge of the “nuts and bolts” of music. Most recently, my lessons have focused on jazz piano and as I’ve said many times, it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever pursued but the best thing for brain stimulation!! Through it all, Jonny has been patient, kind, knowledgeable, inspirational, and fun. I have learned so much and am forever grateful to him for sharing his talent and love of music with me. I would heartily recommend Jonny as a piano teacher for any age and for any musical genre. He is the best!

Mr. Jonny has an incredible passion for music, is very motivating and patient with my 8 year old son. I can see and hear the progress after every lesson. My little man has found love for piano, jazz, other music styles and is trying to writ his own songs now. All thanks to the Evergreen School of Music.

I am an adult student who has been taking lessons from Jonny Sterling for the past 7 years. My goal is 100% for my own personal enjoyment. Jonny understands that and has me on a path where I can achieve the success I want for myself without being frustrated or bored. He has provided tremendous support and inspiration. He understands music so well -- all different genres. On top of it all, we have wonderful discussions about musicians and performances I have seen and is able to provide insight on how music works, from the Beatles to Bartok. Jonny is an awesome teacher for my two boys at different levels. His ability to challenge them within their skill to help them grow and incorporate theory in understandable ways have helped my boys become much more capable and confident players. My older student is interested in jazz and has learned so much from Jonny’s deep expertise for both improvisation and madness of jazz theory. Strongly recommend Jonny for a student at any level.
