Kevin Johnson Guitar Lessons

My teaching approach:

I emphasize good technique and theory. I have extensive performance experience, a Master's degree in classical guitar, and have received instruction by several world famous classical guitarists, including Pepe Romero, Manuel Barrueco, Christopher McGuire, Carlos Barbosa-Lima and others. I have also performed as lead guitarist in several working bands. I enjoy teaching all styles. In my studio, electric students will plug into a tube amp, and all students will appreciate the ability to have their lessons recorded if they wish.

In the introductory lesson, I determine what they have already learned, how there technique looks in general, and what kind of music peaks their interest.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

Normally we will start with something related to technique that I have asked the student to work on. Then we look at the music we're working on. Throughout, I will discuss music theory concepts as they relate to what we're working on. For most students, but not all, we will spend some of the lesson on improvisation skills.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

The ideal student for me is one who has a genuine desire to improve both technically and musically, and have a good time using what they learn.
