This experience is definitely one I wont remember. All the techniques are used in everyday life. It adds a certain structure to my life making thinking and moving easier on me as I grow and continue to practice the movements and techniques

I have received personalized martial arts instruction from Michael Dwyer for over four years and I can say that he is unequivocally the best instructor I have ever had. My day job is working at a 766 special education out of district school as a special educator and in the capacity I have had ample opportunity to learn about what it takes to be a good teacher. Not only does Michael have a lifelong love of improving his own martial arts skill, he also has a deep passion for fostering that desire in others. Michael patiently works with each student to meet them at their individual level, whether they are experienced fighters, young children just starting their journey, or adults who have decided to step into the ring to find out something about themselves. One of my favorite aspects of Michaels instruction is that his focus is not a teaching a specific way to do things but rather on helping students to cultivate within themselves the means for self-expression through martial arts. Countless times, in moments of anxiety, I would question if I was doing something right or experience doubt as to how to learn a particular technique and in those moments Michael would patiently guide me to a greater understanding of not only the art but also myself. Michael has an innate skill for pushing students to be better than they thought they could be and I would often be amazed at how often I thought I could not spend another second on my feet only to find that with Michaels guidance I would find the capacity to throw those few extra punches. Martial arts deserves the utmost respect and Michaels respect for his craft as well as for passing on the lineage means that his students cultivate abilities far beyond increased physical stamina and skill. I particularly enjoyed how Michael would weave philosophy throughout his lessons so as to enrich my understanding on the martial arts, myself, and the world at large. A teacher should be an expert in their subject matter but beyond that it is imperative that a teacher can help their students to understand the subject. In this regard Michael excels, as his varied interests mean that he is always able to find a way to help his students connect. Whether it is describing slipping a hook as Santa Claus picking up a sack of toys or rattling off the original names of a technique in the original language; whatever your level of understanding Michael will cater his lesson to you. As a teacher I can tell you that we dont teach for the money or the summers off but rather for those wonderful moments when we can help students to grow. Michael is a phenomenal martial artist and an incredible teacher. If I could sum up my experience with Michael with one anecdote it would be this: I was sparring with Michael one time, early on in my training with him, and even though I lacked confidence in my ability Michael was pushing me to keep sparring. Suddenly I managed to land a shot, hitting Michael in the face. I wasnt used to sparring and was worried that I might have hurt him but he shook it off immediately and leaped with joy and starting saying how proud he was of me. In that moment I learned something about martial arts, about respect in sparring but most of all I learned that my Sensei was someone who was happy to get hit in the face if it mean that his student was learning and in my mind that captures everything a person could need to know about Michael as a teacher.

    Frequently asked questions

Upon meeting with a new student I will assess their fitness and skill level and work to prepare them a personal approach to achieving their goals and making them a better martial artist.

I have been teaching professionally since 2010 but have studied in various arts since childhood. Teaching is part of the martial artists path though one should never stop learning. I make sure to constantly research new methods for myself and add them to my repertoire if they are effective in combative application.

    $40 per hour personal instruction

I began teaching as a self defense consultant for GKR karate, a world renowned organization. From there after moving to America was introduced to Bruce Lee’s Jeet kune Do from direct lineage of the master himself. I have studied with Dan Inosanto (a personal friend, teacher and student of Bruce Lee), Mark Stas (wing flow system), Tim Tackett (author of Chinatown JKD), Greg Pichardo (Instructor of US Navy Seals and Special Forces), Cass Magda (Magda Institute) and Dustin Santomenna (Phoenix Martial Arts) to name a few. I received certificate of Instructorship for Muay Thai and self defense under Sensei Gabriel Kurunga, black belt of tae kwon do and UFC gym trainer of Muay Thai and Boxing. Also certified under National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association as Muay Thai fitness instructor.

I have worked with students from many different styles and of varying levels of ability. Everybody I train with recognizes the difference in my teaching methods to traditional styles and the improvement to their form becomes more fight functional and increase in fight IQ is guaranteed.

I will be fighting 3 professional kickboxing matches next month. Always training and applying myself to new challenges, inspiring students from around the world. I have taught in England, Boston, India, Philippines and most recently Florida.

A student should find a teacher who treats them as an individual, working based on their personal strengths and weaknesses and developing appropriate regimens for training.
