I like to know their personal experiences with martial arts if any. After that I teach according to the way that they learn and make everything as easy and simplistic as possible for them to learn.

Always check credentials and lineage. Not everyone with a "black belt" can teach and not all self-defense systems are the same even if they are all called "Krav Maga" or "Self-Defense." When being taught techniques ask questions. Don't just go with it if you feel it won't work for you.
What is it they're looking for. Is it fighting, self-defense, fitness, or just. How often they should do it to get the most benefit from it. And just background knowledge about the system/art that you can google to see if they know what they're talking about.
