Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I need to discover what you already know. Then we would have a conversation about the kind and style of guitar that speaks to you. And where you want to go with your guitar playing... What is your end goal?
Now we can devise a plan together to get you there.
My lessons always have two main sections. During the first part of the lesson we review the fundamentals. And we work with a Metronome. And we work on all the basic fingering patterns and exercises.
During the second part of the lesson we begin to work on esr training. This is a very important aspect of my lesson structure.
and all this happens inside of the context of having fun and having you discovering how to play the guitar in a way you never knew that you could.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing guitar professionally for 35 years. My fifth album "TRUE DREW" was endorsed by George Benson. I have scored five Billboard singles in contemporary jazz guitar including a top 10 with "Spin Cycle." After achieving this I then scored a number one pop single "OUT OF THE BLUE" as reported by the euro top 200 chart. I've also been awarded guitar player magazine's top 10 hottest new guitarist in their readers polls.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My lessons are $50 an hour. And if I have to drive more than 15 miles it's $60 an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
Friends of mine in my community wanted to learn and asked me could I teach them. And I said yes! this was at least 25 years ago. And I've been doing it ever since!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students as young as 5?years old up to 85 years old.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am really excited about my new record charting on college radio. The record is called "It's Time."
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The student teacher relationship is very particular. Trust yourself. If you are inspired by a particular guitar teacher that you see go for it! In the end whatever teacher you have you must be willing to do the work. Nothing will happen for you if you're not willing to do the work.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I would get clear on exactly what kind of guitar playing you want to learn. And where you want to go in the next 12 months. And if you're not sure then come with an open mind willing to explore what's possible.
