Bob has been one of the best and most influential teachers Ive ever had in my life. He helped me to discover that I love music, and that passion that he instilled in me has carried forward to make music an important part of my life to this day, and I really can never express how grateful I am for that. He is patient, kind, and compassionate, and plays a tasty soulful guitar too :). I would HIGHLY recommend anyone take lessons with him if they get the chance.

Bob taught me music all throughout high school, and I credit his guidance and the support of the music community he fostered with making music a central part of my life. He can share his mastery of his instrument as well as music theory, but most remarkably he knows how to inspire passion by stepping back and letting his students make their own discoveries and chart their own paths.

Bob is a wonderful guitarist, teacher, and human being. He was an important and relentlessly positive force throughout my high school musical development. Highly recommended!

Bob is an incredibly talented musician and teacher. He is patient, breaks down concepts well and most importantly he makes learning music fun. Not just me, hundreds of students can tell you Bob is one of the most fun people to perform with onstage and learn from in the classroom. Dont miss out on Bob.

Bob was by far the most inspirational teacher I have ever had. Every day, he would go above and beyond to make sure that every student felt heard and was having a great time. In the four years that I had Bob as my teacher, he always made sure that I was exactly where I wanted to be within the music program. In addition, he was always presenting me with opportunities to play music with older and wiser musicians that he knew would inspire me to play my best. Outside of the classroom, Bob was one of the greatest mentors I have had in my life and I can honestly say I would have transferred schools had it not been for him.

Bob was my music teacher when I was a young aspiring musician. His knowledge not only of the guitar but life, in general, helped me to become the professional musician that I am today.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I think it's important to meet the student where he or she is, especially with the kind of music they love. Then I like to help them stay focused in a practice routine and stretch their overall musicality.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
A couple of college degrees and decades of teaching. More importantly, 1000s of gigs in a wide variety of styles in Iowa, San Diego, the SF Bay, Boston, and New Orleans
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It's listed on this site but I prefer hour lessons at $40 an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching younger kids when I was in high school, just like I was taught.
What types of students have you worked with?
Every type. Jerry Cortez, guitarist with Tower of Power, was my student. I have two beginners right now and everybody in between. I have a couple dozen students from my classroom you have toured with Maroon 5, Jacob Colier, Don Henley. Maggie Rogers, K. Flay, and many more. Years ago I taught a student who was blind and another who was deaf.
I specialize in expanding rock and blues players' knowledge of jazz lines and chords.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Three great concerts: One featuring Gladys Knight that I watched from the front row. (And what a band!!) Jacob Collier's show In Kansas City (what brilliance!). My former students Desiree Cannon and Sam Doores on their Omaha stop in a big tour (so proud!)
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
You will work harder and more consistently if we find things that excite you and move you forward! Also, find others to play with!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Can you actually help me get better?
