About

My teaching approach:

Brian is a licensed K-12 music teacher and experienced performer. Offering in-home voice, guitar, piano, banjo, electric bass, music theory, and songwriting lessons to students anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. Having worked with students ages 3-74, Brian is ready to work with you.

My influences are:

Teaching wise I've got the influences of all the usual educational psychologists; Maslow, Bloom, etc.. Music wise I've played and sang many styles but lately I'm most influenced by the 'folkies' like Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan. After learning lots of complicated music I found myself desiring the simple stuff that more easily connects people - I found the 'folkies' and it seemed like a good fit.

My guitar lessons take place in:

The student's home

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

Teaching private lessons is my full time profession. I offer lessons 7 days/week during all reasonable hours. Some times are obviously taken but I'm sure I can find a time that works for you. Contact me to get started.

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Slide Guitar, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

I strongly believe that the first lesson (like the first day of school) sets the tone for everything to come. Since I place great value in the personal interaction of music lessons, my first priority is to establish a connection with the student. We discuss our favorite music, what brought them to the idea of learning music, any goals they have for the future, and also non-musical things to get to know one another better. Playing wise we start from the very beginning, if students are more advanced we blow through the simple materials until I can assess the student's abilities accurately.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

At our first lesson I give my students my guitar method book. This binder serves as our curriculum, includes many of our first songs, prompts us towards composition, etc.. In our lessons my students learn techniques (chords, scales, strumming, etc.), learn songs, and compose. Some students learn best focusing on concepts and adding repertoire as needed while some students do better focusing on songs and incidentally learning techniques. While all of my students learn the same basics (before branching out into personally chosen advanced techniques), each student's teaching is personalized.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal guitar student is eager to learn - anything else is secondary. When a student is eager to learn; they're curious and personalize the material being taught, they find time to practice, they have musical interests which contribute to their personal style, and they pursue musical opportunities wherever they can find them. Whether a student learns fast or slow doesn't matter to me, only that they want to learn.
