Many people that teach martial arts are outstanding practitioners and lousy teachers. I am a highly proficient martial artist that has a college degree in educational psychology, so I will always find a way for you to pursue excellence in the curriculum that I am sharing with you. Further, I only teach teens and adults in "one-on-one" and small group situations, so we can achieve a great deal of progress in weekly one-hour sessions with no distractions (other than the beautiful Carolina weather).
I hold advanced rank black belts in several martial arts and will never stop seeking the answers. Most of my new/ beginner level students will start out with 4-5 lessons in basic boxing style which will allow the new student to practice and get a good workout on their own in any gym facility that has a heavy bag and a mirror. This is generally followed by alternating that empty hand training with blunt/ improvised weapon training. Over time we add grappling and edged weapon training to the mix. The training progression is suited perfectly for adults that are looking to develop personal protection skills in their workout time slot. No children please, and please don't ask for karate, MMA or anything sport specific like that. The Counterpoint Tactical System does not follow any kind of sporting rules.
I hope to hear from you soon. RH
I love to train, so any excuse to get on the mat with someone is my daily goal. Having said that, probably my greatest reward is seeing the confidence that grows in my students as they develop a proficiency in the Counterpoint Tactical System.
“Nothing is stronger than a person that has decided to quit THINKING about their goals and start WORKING on them”
“I've had the opportunity to know and learn from Russ Haas for about 10 years now. In my opinion, his understanding of the arts is exceeded only by his ability as a teacher and in his commitment to bring out the absolute best in his students, both in their physical practice and their mental aptitude. If you are looking for a school for yourself and your family I cannot imagine a finer, more creatively cultivated environment for self-discovery through martial arts than with Russ and Mindy at Haastyle Martial Arts Academy.”
I am an experienced Martial Artist, I obtained the rank of Fourth Degree Black Belt, in American Kenpo Karate, from my Instructor, Richard “Huk” Planas. I am also a 30 year veteran of Police work, working in South Florida. I have know Russ Haas for many years and we have attended seminars together. Russ had been training with Zach Whitson in Mr. Whitson’s Counterpoint Tactical System (CTS), becoming one of Mr. Whitson’s first Black Belts . I have known Zach since 1991. Zach attained the rank of 7th Degree Black Belt in Kenpo from Huk Planas. I started to train on a regular basis in CTS with Russ Haas approximately two and half years ago. CTS is what I had been looking for. It is a practical, realistic and all inclusive Martial Art. I can suggest no system of martial art and no better Instructor in the System than Mr. Russ Haas. Not only due to his knowledge of the system but his ability to convey it in a simple and concise manner, which allows the student to absorb the material. I have been on the mat with some of the top Martial Artists of our time in my 30 plus years. But very few have the ability to convey the Material to the student like Mr. Haas. South Florida’s loss is Raleigh/Durams gain.
I teach out of my house; teens and adults only please. I am also available to come to you or your gym or local park. I teach one-on-one or small groups (husband/ wife; parent/ teen; co-workers etc.). Most of my students start with an interest in boxing or grappling. From that foundation it becomes a very short step to weapon training.
I hold advanced black belt degrees in several styles/ systems. I also have a college degree in educational psychology; so many outstanding martial artists are not good instructors. I have been praised by those in the industry for being an outstanding communicator.

I was always going to be a teacher, but it wasn't until I found martial arts that I knew what I would be teaching. One must love what they do in order to pass it on to enthusiastic students.
I have worked with all ages, although, I am no longer teaching youth students. My top students are a 53yo male doctor, a 17yo female HS student and a 35yo male electrician, 50+yo mom, 50yo construction foreman, and 52yo male homicide detective. I can work with anyone that is willing to learn.
Find a teacher that KNOWS HOW TO TEACH, not just perform.
Q. Can I train with <fill in the blank> injury or limitation?
A. #trainingHaastyle means doing what you can and not worrying about what you can't. Martial arts training should not break down your body.
Q. I just want to get in shape. Will your training do that for me?
A. You can be in ANY kind of shape and still be successful in my program. You will gain improved health and improved motivation to get/ stay healthy. You DO NOT have to be in shape already to train. In my experience, one of the most used excuses for not training is being "out of shape" - this is a big mistake, my program demands of you only what you have to give and we are always looking for progress. In fact, my program is a great place to start.
Q. Can you come to me at my house/ work?
Q. Do I need a uniform?
A. No, we train in street/ gym clothes.
Q. Do you offer any other discounts?
A. haha - I'll tell you what, since you made it this far, I will make your first lesson FREE, otherwise see the prices above and let me know if you have any questions.
