About

My teaching approach:

Berklee College of Music graduate with over 30 years performance, writing, studio and teaching experience. I customize lessons to the individual, so you will work on material that focuses on your strengths and weaknesses. I also enjoy helping students learn tunes that THEY are interested in. Any style is valid in my book. Most of all, I try to make lessons fun! While you don't need much experience to study with me, I don't take complete beginners. I feel that your local music store would be more cost effective for students at this level. Minimum age for children is ten years of age.

My influences are:

Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Albert King Stevie Ray, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Michael Brecker, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, prog rock from the 70's, The Beatles, J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy

My guitar lessons take place in:

Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours:

Mon: 5 - 9PM Wed: 5 - 9PM Thurs: 11AM - 9PM Fri: 11AM - 6PM

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Guidance In Equipment Selection

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

I want to see: whether the student can read notation or tabs, knowledge of the fretboard, knowledge of scales and chords, ability to play with a metronome, which genres the student is enthusiastic about.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I split the lesson into several areas: technique studies, reading studies (if student is interested in reading), improvisation practice, learning songs. If we start to take little "side trips" during lessons to explore an unexpected area for a couple of weeks, I let the lesson go in that direction. In my view, studying an instrument is like improvising - sometimes the process tells you where it needs to go.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

My ideal student is one who practices! It doesn't matter if you're a beginner or pro. You will not make progress without consistant practice. What you do with me at a lesson does not make you a musician. It's what you do when you leave that counts.
