About

I'm a professional concert pianist and have performed throughout the United States and Europe. I'm also a Steinway Artist, documentary filmmaker, and educator. As a music professor with a Ph.D., I specialize in performance, theory, aesthetics, and music history. As a result, I bring to my students over two decades of experience and the ability to tailor lessons to their individual needs, abilities, and goals.

My rate is $2/minute. Most lessons for children run 30 - 45 minutes, and lessons for adults are typically an hour.

If you're outside New York City, I'm happy to work via Zoom. Otherwise, I teach from my studio in Manhattan.

I admit, when I thought about practicing piano in this virtual world we now work in, I was nervous to learn the basics without a guide to accompany me. But with Daniel, it was truly seamless and simple. Since working with Daniel for the first half of 2021, I have managed to learn the basics of piano, and am genuinely enjoying the work. Because Daniel is a music professor and performer by trade, he is the best at starting from scratch and cooking up a custom lesson plan to match your goals.
First I was intimidated by his CV, but he was nothing but polite and humble. He finds organic ways to relate the lesson to real-life events, which appeals to learners at all levels. He has a down to earth, honest, open, agile and outgoing personality, which makes working with him fun and exciting. I always walk away from the lesson feeling like I learned the right way to do something, and excited for next week!
Daniel grounds all of his lessons in practical music theory, and the difference is obvious when working with a piano teacher. Especially when the lessons are virtual, it was essential to be taught the proper methods and truly grasp them before moving onto the next task. Dr. Beliavsky’s motto that always rings true in his lessons is “It’s all about progress, not perfection.” Daniel had no problem answering my silly questions on method and theory. In the end, it made our lessons more comfortable and carefree, while remaining disciplined and focused. He is a very talented man that makes learning piano - in person or virtually - fun at any age. I’ve recommended him to a few of my girlfriends for children’s piano lessons and they’ve had success with Daniel as well! He was a great find!

I graduated from the City College of New York in 2013 with the highest honors for Classical Piano, and am a professional musician: out of all of my teachers, Dr. Beliavsky (whom I studied theory with) is still, to this day, one of the most unforgettable ones who have left an indelible mark on me. His level of expertise in theory, analysis, piano and composition among others is awe inspiring and thought provoking in a truly mind-altering way. He has an uncanny ability to take very complex ideas and making them clear. I am honored to say that I still consult with him to this day about multiple issues, and his level of genuine care, alongside with his phenomenal expertise, makes him, for me, a one of a kind teacher.

Professor Beliavsky is deeply committed to his students. He prepares his lessons meticulously, explains concepts clearly, and encourages questions. He brings the same degree of attention and care to his teaching that he does to his performing. I couldnt recommend him more as a music/piano teacher.

I had Daniel Beliavsky for my piano professor in college. He always found a way to make his students understand, even if that meant taking numerous approaches. He would listen to what we had to say, and then give his advice afterwards. As a former teacher, myself, I can see that he genuinely wants his students to improve. That, combined with his knowledge, expertise, and multiple approaches/teaching and learning techniques make him an incredible instructor. I can only imagine how much I could have learned and improved if I took private lessons. It is a privilege to have been taught by Daniel Beliavsky.

    Frequently asked questions

The first step is to talk with new students to understand their interests and goals. I then evaluate their skill set, and we proceed according to what best fits their abilities and desired outcomes. I can work with students via Zoom or in person if they come to my studio in NYC.

I started performing as a child and had my professional debut at age 15. Following that, I toured the United States, Canada, and Europe, performing with orchestras and in recital. My undergraduate degree is in music, and my master's and Ph.D. are in music theory and composition. I have taught extensively for over 20 years, and have worked with thousands of students in music performance, theory, aesthetics, and history.

I currently teach piano privately and courses in music theory, history, aesthetics, and musicianship at the college level. I chair a music department at a private college in NYC.

My professional rate is $120 per hour or $2 per minute.

I started teaching while in graduate school. First, I was a TA in several music theory classes, and once I completed my doctorate, I began teaching at the college level and now chair a music department at a private university in New York City. I have been teaching piano privately for over 20 years parallel to my work in academia and in performance.

I work with all ranges of experience and all ages.

I recommend that each prospective student have one trial lesson with me, for which I charge a flat rate of $60 for 30 to 60 minutes of work. The trial lesson is an opportunity for both teacher and student to get a sense of one another and to begin establishing professional rapport. Look for an instructor from whom you'll enjoy learning and who inspires and motivates you.
