About

Hello! I teach online and in person at my studio in New York City near Times Square. I teach voice and acting to people of all ages who love to sing, who think they can't sing, or who would like to sing more athletically than they currently do. I provide additional acting (voice & speech), piano accompanying, and self-taping services for professional musical theatre students.

I am a vocal coach and troubleshooter with 25+ years of experience as a private voice teacher, audition coach, music director, and piano accompanist. I enjoy providing practical, affordable and tailored lessons to aspiring athletes and artists pursuing their dreams to belt out on Broadway, let loose with karaoke, or rock out with a local band. I really enjoy troubleshooting difficult songs and helping my students who are passionately committed to their goals but who have limited time and finances for a more traditional curriculum. I welcome students who find it more difficult to learn with exercises and scales, and I welcome students who need more flexibility with their scheduling. Please contact me directly to ask for any additional information.

My main expertise is coaching professional dancers, singers, and actors to:

(1) sing a variety of styles (especially pop/rock),

(2) build a brand-specific audition book,

(3) develop a strong and flexible speaking voice,

(4) prepare sides and monologues for callbacks, and

(5) explore a storyteller mindset.

Although I work primarily with young professionals, I also enjoy serving recreational learners whose musical dreams may simply be to:

(1) learn a new song,

(2) sing karaoke with friends, or

(3) jam out alone with YouTube.

For both recreational and professional learners, I hope to instill a love and joy of singing and acting without the pressure of grades, perfection, and judges.

LESSONS FOR CHILDREN (6-18): Please refer to additional information for curriculum suggestions for children.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS: NYSTA (New York Singing Teachers' Association), NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), Voice Foundation, VASTA (Voice and Speech Trainers Association)

PHILOSOPHY: Practical troubleshooting is the main driving force behind my lessons. As a coach, I often meditate on the following questions:

(1) How do we make sounds and communicate with speech and song?

(2) How do we convert 2D symbols (text) into a 3D body (performer) and create a 4D emotional experience (audience)?

(3) How do we use these skills to live more freely, intentionally, and expressively?

I hope to instill an appreciation for and a desire to answer these questions. As I continually train to be a useful coach, I hope the students that I meet will continually learn to be useful artists.

My main goal as a teacher is to share my knowledge and experience in a personalized way so that my students no longer need me to reach their goals, that they are able to teach themselves, and that, ultimately, they become fellow collaborators and troubleshooters.

Wow, I don’t even know where to start — but I’ll begin by saying how grateful I am that SD was my first choice when I started looking for singing lessons. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she turned out to be more than just a great teacher — she’s full of energy, encouragement, and always brings good vibes to every lesson.

I’ve been taking lessons with her for over a year now via Zoom, and for the past six months, we’ve met every week. I have dyslexia, and for a long time I saw it as something negative — but SD never did. She helped me see it in a new light. Anytime I didn’t understand something, she would always find a new way to explain it so it made sense to me.

I was never someone who believed much in luck, but every time our lesson ends, I can’t help but feel lucky to know someone like SD.

SD Lewis is the best voice teacher I’ve ever worked with. She takes the time to truly understand you as a vocalist and tailors exercises to help you develop your unique sound. Since working with her, I feel much more confident in my singing. I finally understand how to control my voice and use it with purpose.

I’ve been working with SD since late 2022. As someone who has performed in musical theatre recreationally, I was curious about stepping into a more professional world—and SD played a significant role in guiding me down that path.
Working with her gave me confidence in styles I hadn’t explored much before, especially pop and rock genres beyond traditional musical theatre. She helped me develop an ear for technique—now I can listen to a singer and identify the vocal methods they’re using.
If you want, you also have the chance to sing duets with other students and perform in front of an audience—experiences that helped me rediscover the joy of singing and grow more comfortable on stage. SD even offers the option to record your singing during lessons or performances, which gives you valuable material to watch back and work on independently.
As a non-native English speaker, I also received invaluable support with pronunciation, which made a big difference in my performances.
And beyond singing, I gained tools to improve my acting—especially when it came to expressing emotion and intention during a song. SD helped me connect more deeply to the material, making each performance feel more honest and impactful.
Whether you want to grow as a singer without losing the joy of music, feel burned out from routine practice, hope to explore different musical styles, or dream of truly moving people—not just sing well—with your voice, SD can help.
Beyond all the technical progress, what stayed with me the most is the way SD teaches from the heart.
Working with her felt like joining a community—and at times, even like gaining a mentor or a life coach. She brings warmth, presence, and deep care into every session.
She’s made a meaningful impact on my musical journey, and I believe she can do the same for you.

SD is a professional, versatile, and flexible voice teacher. She’s incredibly precise in her teaching approach—always knowing what areas I need to work on—but she does it in a way that’s never intimidating or overwhelming.
What I really appreciate is how pressure-free and student-centered her method is. During my first few sessions, we did what she called a “tasting” phase, where I got to explore different genres to find what suits me best. That made the process feel both fun and personal.
She also has a talent for simplifying complex musical concepts, which is a huge plus for someone like me with little to no background in music theory. Beyond the individual lessons, I even had the chance to meet fellow students and sing duets—something I didn’t expect but really enjoyed!
Her teaching style is truly one-of-a-kind: relaxed, engaging, and yet super effective. Ive seen real improvement in my singing, and I always look forward to the next lesson. Highly recommended! 🤩👍

Working with SD is like unlocking the full potential of your voice as an instrument. She has a huge toolkit of physical and technical exercises that really connect the voice to the body, which makes the work feel grounded and empowering. What I love most is how versatile she is. She can coach across any genre, so it’s exciting to switch things up while still using the same core techniques, just adapted. Every session feels like a blend of craft and play.

I have loved working with SD. I grew up as a concert dancer and was interested in transitioning into the musical theater world, and SD helped me make it happen! She is wonderful at explaining difficult concepts in a way that “non-singers” can understand and implement. I always feel comfortable working with SD and leave every lesson with more tools to use for both auditioning, and for just singing along with my guitar. She helps you discover parts of your voice that you didn’t even know about - skills you didn’t even know you have! Lessons with SD are both fun and productive, the perfect combination. 10/10 would recommend!
