About

The Jalopy Theatre and School of Music is a Brooklyn, NY nonprofit arts venue and music school founded in 2006 in Red Hook by Geoff and Lynette Wiley. It presents weekly performances and open mics, showcasing evolving folk and traditional music from New York City, the Americas, and around the world. Education programs serve all ages, with adult group classes in banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and ukulele; Jalopy Jr classes for children; private lessons; and weekend workshops in topics such as music theory, the history of American string music, washboard, bones, and old-time banjo. Financial aid is available.

The venue also offers vintage instrument sales and repair and is available to rent for private events, music videos, and films. Jalopy operates Jalopy Records and is associated with the Brooklyn Folk Festival. Through a partnership with Living Traditions, a nonprofit founded in 1994 known for producing KlezKamp, Jalopy operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional folk music. Programming supports local and touring artists, fosters a multi-generational community, and emphasizes hands-on, participatory learning.
