My teaching approach:

My approach is to ask the student what their goals are and help them achieve short term goals which will move them towards their long term goals, while having fun and enjoyin

themselves. My experience has been with all ages and at all levels. I began teaching somewhat by accident and found that I was good at it and enjoyed it a lot. Eventually I attended Musicians Institute with the intention of teaching full time afterwards. I graduated in 1993 and have been teaching full time since.

My influences are:

Most of my music teachers all through school were a postive influence on me, but particularly my experiences at Musicians Institute influenced my views on teaching and learning.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

It is very important in the introductory lesson to not only establish rapport and ease nervousness on the students part, but to establish what brought them to me and what they would like to accomplish. This can sometimes be difficult as the student may not be able to establish reasonable goals or have sufficient practice time to meet their goals. Assessing the students playing ability, seeing how their hands move and the quality of their tone.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

I start each lesson by asking "What have you been practicing?", the student then demonstrates last weeks assignment and we pick up where we left off. Occasionally a lesson will take a new direction due to new goals from the student, questions, inspiration and as the student progresses, they are better able to know how to set their own goals, what to expect and what are reasonable expectations given their available practice time.
