About
I hold a BA (University of Oregon), MA, and PhD (Northwestern University) in music education. I've got 35 years of experience playing and over 25 years of experience teaching with students from age 4 to 78, grade school to college, and lots of adult beginners.
I play trumpet, guitar, and percussion (djembe, conga), as well as didgeridoo, flute and sax, and I love to mess around with more obscure instruments, effects pedals, and other electronics.
If you'd like to hear me play (usually trumpet and/or guitar), I often play with The Hot Club of Bend, The Nomads, and Chiringa, as well as my own group.
Making music is something that defies easy description, but one thing I know, making music is SUPER fun. To me, helping others see, hear, and experience that fun is priceless. Lighting another's candle with one's own only makes for more light. Everybody wins!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
A student's goals are the most important thing. In addition to assessing a student's strengths and weaknesses, we talk about goals and together we craft a plan for reaching short-term and long-term goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I did my graduate work (BA, PhD) at Northwestern University, one of the premiere music schools anywhere. My research focus was on practice, and the learning sciences, among others.
I've been playing and performing music for over 35 years, and I love all parts of it: practicing, playing, and teaching.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with beginners of around 6 to comeback and begging players over 75, and everything in between, including college students. I've never met a student of any level that I can't help achieve more skill and better musicianship.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try out a few lessons.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals, both short-term, and long-term? What is your greatest strength? Your greatest weakness? Your greatest fear?
