About this pro

My teaching approach: I've been playing guitar for 34 years and performing for 30 years. My approach to teaching is based upon the individual's needs and desires and geared towards guiding the students to express themselves on their instrument. Fun is a primary focus in order to motivate the student to play as much as possible outside the lesson and develop a deep relationship with their instrument. My guitar lessons take place in: the teacher's studio. Soringhart Studios in West Eugene, Oregon. UPDATE:  Due to the corona virus lockdown, lessons are via video chat platforms until the restrictions ease up.  Guitar Techniques: Guidance In Equipment Selection, Recording and Production, Song Writing, Scales and Exercises, Music Theory, Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Jamming Skills

I am an older learner and Geoffrey has done a job great tailoring my lessons to my skill level and interests. We have a good time during our lessons. He is teaching me the basics but is also encouraging me to explore and play around with what I'm learning! I highly recommend him!

Hi Everyone; I am 79, and I began taking guitar lessons with Geoffrey when I was about 72. Early on we played some public events. including Senior Centers & soon I will delivery my second CD for friends and family. Geoffrey has always been kind, considerate and supportive towards me and I am proud to call him my friend.

Under Geoffrey Mays' guidance and instruction my ability to improvise over any chord progression using the modes has improved dramatically. He listens to your goals and helps to structure a series of lessons that will help you get where you want to be. He has developed his own method for guitar instruction that is clear and understandable. He has a calm and even way of conveying musical ideas. He has the ability to play any style of music. He will show you what you need to do to play the songs you want to play and he will provide constructive criticism. If you put in the time to practice between lessons you will make appropriate progress. Geoffrey has helped me with both rhythm and lead guitar playing for my work in classic rock band, with a horn section. All of band members have commented on the improvement in my playing - so much so that the band is tackling more complex songs. I highly recommend Geoffrey Mays as a guitar instructor.

Where do we start!?!? First of all, he is extremely talented!!! He currently gives both of my girlies lessons, one plays acoustic and the other, electric guitar. He has a flare for firing up my girlies to be excited and passionate about their music. Each girl has a different interest and goal and Geoffrey helps them to achieve those goals and have fun while doing that. One of my daughters wants to understand the theory of guitar music, while the other just wants to rock out to the beat of her own drum.... despite these differences, Geoffrey is always up for the challenge. His love for music is truly amazing and you can’t help but to learn and love the guitar when you are with him. Geoffrey is also very patient. We feel sooo blessed to be his students( yes , sometimes I take lessons when I can, so he is even patient with left handed adults). If creating your own music is your desire, Geoffrey will help you achieve that. If you desire to produce your own CD, Geoffrey , is your man too!! I have had lessons myself with multiple other instruments and activities and I have never had as much fun as I do when I have a lesson with Geoffrey! Geoffrey Rocks!!! He is the best of the best!!!!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I offer a free half hour introductory lesson, so that the prospective student can see how I work and determine if I'm the right teacher for them.  Once they sign up (no obligation for any particular number of lessons), it is an hour lesson, generally once a week, and is geared towards the students goals and desires.  We want to make it fun and exciting!
