About

With my students, I begin by establishing an understanding of music and the guitar in a broader sense, without focusing on a particular genre. The guitar is an incredibly versatile instrument that is present in countless styles of music all over the world, and this broad understanding better prepares students to approach any genre that appeals to them. Lessons focus on development of proper technique, music theory, and music reading. Lessons are geared toward the student's personal goals as a musician.

Teaching experience

I have taught many private students in the past five years, teaching primarily classical guitar. I have also taught beginning guitar and songwriting classes to groups of elementary school age students. While pursuing my Master's Degree I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Department of Music at Austin Peay State University. I assisted in the instruction of undergraduate guitar students and taught Music Technology. I am currently an Adjunct Faculty member at Austin Peay.

Frequently asked questions

I will first determine the student's music reading skills and understanding of music notation. I will then determine what knowledge of the guitar the student already possesses and correct misconceptions if any. From there we will start with the parts of the guitar, the correct posture when sitting with the guitar, and the first notes.

I have worked with students from as young as 8 years old to retirees.

I would advise students to hire a teacher who has had extensive training on their instrument. Only then can a profound love and understanding of the instrument be fostered in the student.
