How did you get started teaching?
I, Haley, started teaching when I was in college. I decided to start teaching private voice lessons at a local high school to make some money prior to graduation and ended up falling in love with it!
The lightbulb moments that my students get when they figure out a technique for the first time or the moment they get cast in a show are the moments that I absolutely live for.
What types of students have you worked with?
We work with all types of students from as young as 5 all the way through adults!
We welcome everybody from every walk of life, every race, every gender, every orientation under the sun. You are welcome here!
We work with complete beginners through advanced voice students. Our main focus is musical theater, however, we are also pros at classical music for solo & ensemble or other competitions as well as pop/rock styles. We do have audition prep specialists on our team if you are preparing for college auditions, community theater auditions, broadway auditions, or anything in between!
We take on all levels of guitar students starting at age 5.
We take piano students up to higher intermediate levels. We are not able to teach professional piano students at this time.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of our students recently texted me, Haley, that she had a very successful audition for her school musical! She was so proud of the work that she has put in to get to this point and told me every detail. I am so proud of her and cannot wait to see how far she goes!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you find a studio that you enjoy the vibe of!
You will be spending time every week with your instructor and you will be receiving frequent communications from the studio owner so you want to make sure you like the vibe that you're coming into!
If you're looking for a studio that is transformational and will do everything in our power to help you achieve your goals, that's absolutely Birchwood.
If you're looking for a studio to try out music lessons at without much outside communication between lessons, you'll want to look for a different studio.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1 - Why is now the right time to start lessons?
2 - What drew you to this studio?
3 - What are your big goals for music?
4 - What is one smaller goal that we can work to achieve right now?
5 - How much practice are you willing to put in between lessons?
