About

Hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my profile. I run a private lesson business out of my home that's located in the Northeast Side of San Antonio off of Thousand Oaks and Jones Maltsberger. Here’s some information about my career thus far as a professional musician:

I believe that music is meant to be shared, and my lifelong goal is to bring music to people who may not otherwise have access to it in a way that is approachable, meaningful, and healing. I hold a master’s degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, where I was the graduate assistant for Dr. Thomas Viloteau, and a bachelor’s of music degree with a concentration in music education and guitar performance from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Because of the experience that I have gained as an educator, performer, and citizen artist I believe that I am extremely qualified to teach music of all genres and nurture a love for music making in each of my students.

I have substantial experience during my 10 years as an educator through my work teaching music in a variety of settings, including being faculty at The Loyola University of Maryland, Aspen Music Festival and School, Peabody Fret Fest, D.C. Strings, Austin Classical Guitar’s (ACG) Juvenile Detention Program, Guitar San Antonio, a retirement community in Baltimore, and UT San Antonio String Project after-school music program as assistant director where I taught and conducted guitar ensembles. My students have performed in the ACG Youth Orchestra, won prizes in competitions, and been awarded scholarships to pursue music at the university level. I have taught students of all ages from 4 to 94. I’ve taught an assortment of genres and styles, including rock, pop, jazz, and classical, from Taylor Swift to Bach to Chet Atkins. Overall, my dedication and resourcefulness make me an adaptable teacher, who is able to mentor any student interested in learning guitar.

Outside of my solo performance career, I enjoy collaborating with other artists and premiering new music. Playing music with others is a passion of mine. I have performed as a member of the chamber group The Raven Trio, the award-winning rock band SquidHouse, and The Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band. In addition, I have also worked as a session artist, where I have recorded for Ashna Pathan’s musical “Senior Year Is Gonna Kill Me!”, Leaf’s rap album “Art By Leaf”, and 777s’ rock album “Computer Soul.” I’ve had the privilege to perform in unique spaces, including the Randolph Air Force Base, AlamoDome, Tobin Center, Berkeley United Methodist Church, South Texas Research Facility, North Oaks Retirement Community, Methodist Hospital, Leith Symington Griswold Hall, and Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall. In the fall of 2022, I completed a residency with El Paso Pro Musica. During this program, I toured the city performing concerts, teaching masterclasses at UT El Paso, and providing workshops with the Raven Trio. I am an avid proponent of new music and have premiered new works by Matthew Dunne, Michael Keplinger, Matt Bacon, Ashley Lucero, and Fabian Beltran.

Beyond the traditional environments of teaching and performing, I have extended my career into the field of arts in health. For two years, I was the Musician in Residence at North Oaks Retirement Community in Baltimore. While there, I performed for the residents on a bi-weekly basis in both the independent and assisted living facility; held public practice sessions; and taught monthly classes on different musical subjects. I also performed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital for the Peabody Institute’s program ‘Music for a While.’ This program creates public access to music within the hospital environment to elevate mood and reduce anxiety among those who visit, work, and are cared for within the hospital via short, informal, and accessible musical programs.

I believe that my combined experience as an educator, performer, and citizen artist make me an excellent fit to be your guitar teacher. I find sharing music with people in any way possible — whether it’s through my own performances, teaching, or community engagement — to be incredibly rewarding work. As your guitar instructor, I would continue to share my passion for music with you and prepare you to have your own musical interactions with people in a way that is approachable, meaningful, and healing.

Thank you so much for your consideration. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

Warm regards,

Caleb Bailey

I have been with Caleb for almost 4 years, and it has been nothing short of a pleasure. When I first began with him I had no knowledge nor skill of playing the guitar. Because of his intuitiveness as a teacher, attention to detail, and patience. I am now able to read sheet music, play bar cords, and have a solid understanding of music theory. Whether you are a beginner or a guitar player who wants to take your knowledge and skill to the next level, then Caleby Bailey is your teacher.

My son has worked with Caleb for the last 5 years and not only has he learned so much but he also enjoys his lesson. Caleb is very knowledgeable and very patient. We started in person 5 years ago and now have continued with zoom while Caleb was away going to school. I highly recommend him and my son is doing classical and electric guitar! He has helped him with both and he loves it!

Caleb was my bass guitar instructor for 2 semesters and I liked how versatile his teaching was. He taught me how to construct walking basslines and improvise for jazz standards, but also taught me how to hybrid-pick for playing math-rock basslines. He provided me strategies for practicing and learning difficult passages more effectively, in addition to exercises for developing finger independence and greater control in the left hand, and fixing my technique in the right hand. Caleb is also incredibly knowledgeable in theory and would always be able to answer any of my questions or teach me something new. Hes also very personable and I would always look forward to his lessons!

My band and I won a $500 cash prize for winning a Battle of the Bands competition at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Very grateful for all the time and energy Mr. Bailey put into my bandmates and I, weve all grown tremendously since we begin taking lessons with him.

Caleb is outstandingly patient and an emotionally intelligent teacher. He always ensures Im having fun above all else, which I think is something that often gets lost when learning music. That being said, hes also very efficient and I learn a lot during my short lessons with him!! Ive taken a lot of lessons with a lot of different teachers, and Caleb has provided the best experience Ive ever had!!

Frequently asked questions

My process for working with a new student involves learning about the reason for their curiosity in learning how to play the guitar and setting goals that fit the needs of each individual student. Examples of goals include learning songs or pieces that they are particularly passionate about, goals centered around music literacy (learning how to read in standard notation, or tablature), or specific technical goals. No two people are alike, therefore each lesson that I have with a student is going to be tailored to their needs.
I hold a masters degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, as well as a bachelors of music degree with a concentration in music education and guitar performance from The University of Texas at San Antonio.

I got started teaching when I was still a teenager in high school while being the president of the guitar club at James Madison High School. I would lead lessons where I taught different guitar riffs or chords to the members.
