Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each new student is briefly interviewed and fills out a student questionnaire to help prepare a lesson plan that will best suit the students' needs. A free consultation is offered to each new student prior to arranging their personalized lesson plan.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a professional educator for over 40 years. My work experience has been teaching in private and school class rooms. I have worked with Elementary, Middle school, High school and College aged students. I also teach special needs and adult education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
There are several monthly lesson packages available. For most beginners I recommend a four (30 minute) Lesson plan that meets one day each week. The cost is $120 per month. A one time registration of $30 includes the student folder and instructor prepared material.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching guitar as a teenager when I was a junior counselor at a summer camp. I'm passionate about music and enjoy helping others to accomplish their musical goals.
What types of students have you worked with?
See above. All ages!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I hosted a local music jam here in Jacksonville for 4 years. It's fun to meet other local musicians and share our music. We teach and encourage learning to preform to a live audience. We have equipment for open mic as well as event performances. I have been involved as a stage coordinator and performer for several annual events here in East Texas for 8 years. Christmas time our students perform a Christmas recital and Spring we often hold a few recitals. Many students have played at Jacksonville's annual Tomato Fest on the Main stage and on Commerce St. We play for local charity events and a few in Tyler. When asked we have preformed at our Chamber of Commerce events, churches and nursing homes.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Having an experienced professionally trained teacher can make a huge difference in a students ability to learn a new skill. Guitar is a wonderful instrument that hopefully will become a lifetime passion. A teacher should be able to clearly demonstrate proper techniques and knowledge. Adjusting to each individual, so the focus of their lesson plan, materials and practice techniques helps the student achieve their musical goals. At the same time, having fun is so important! I want my students to enjoy as they learn. I love playing the guitar and I've been told that shows in my teaching style.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What type of music do you most enjoy? What type or size guitar will be best for the student? Do you possibly plan to play professional in the future?
