Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Essence of Rhythm intensive. If your sense of rhythm and keeping time is not well developed it becomes the primary tripping point for most amateur musicians. However, we always need a couple of good riffs to jam on. We must always fall back on having fun and relaxing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's in Classical Guitar from Stetson University. I have taken master classes with: Dr. Stephen Robinson, Roland Dyens, David Russel, Jason Vieaux, Oscar Giglia, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Antigoni Goni, and many more. I have also played the instrument continuously for 35 years. And last but not least, I took my time to profoundly study the art of classical Hindustani Rhythm thru becoming proficient at Tabla and Recitation.
How did you get started teaching?
During my University years.
What types of students have you worked with?
All kinds.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If he/she does not focus on your rhythmic and time keeping foundation and does not practically apply the use of a metronome, their creating weak points in your performance without you even knowing it. Also, if they don't take the time to break things down to their most essential parts, you will end up confused and frustrated.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my key goals? Performance? Songwriting? Improvisation?
Will I pursue this professionally or just as a hobbie?
Do I want a classical technique foundation or is that not important to me?
Can I make the time to play daily for at least 30 to 45 minutes?
