About
My name is Mike, and I have been teaching the guitar for over 20 years. I have helped hundreds of musicians develop their skills. As a performer, I have played in many bands, and shared the stage with performers such as Imagine Dragons, Train, Blues Traveler, Camper Van Beethoven, and countless others. In addition to teaching music and rock ensemble to the students at the University of San Francisco, I maintain an active schedule of teaching, performing and recording. My most memorable musical experience was playing "Imagine" on my guitar for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in 2003.

My teaching philosophy is that if you understand the instrument, you can play any style of music you choose. The more you dedicate yourself to learning the fretboard, the more freely you can express yourself musically.
Private instruction includes everything from basic chording to advanced theory and technique, with a focus on the mechanics of the instrument. Topics covered include rhythm and technique studies, chord and scale theory, chord progressions, songwriting, musicality and performance, and improvisation. These topics are studied at a rate commensurate with the studentʼs ability.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first lesson (which is free) is an opportunity to meet the student, assess skill level, and to discuss goals and outcomes. Because each player is in a different place on the path, each approach is unique, and lessons are designed with the individual in mind
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I began playing the violin at age 8, studied privately for 10 year while also participating in state and university orchestras. I started playing the guitar at age 18, with private study in New York City and California.
I have played and recorded with national touring bands for over 25 years. I have taught guitar at the University of San Francisco since 2001, as well as maintaining a group private students.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
One hour lessons are $90 each, and are paid for in advance.
I also offer a sliding scale for students, based on need. This means you pay what you can afford. Shopping for a guitar teacher based on pricing is a huge mistake. The first lesson is FREE- if there is a good fit, we can come up with a rate that works for both of us.
If you are serious about learning the guitar, I am serious about helping you reach your musical goals.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as a way to support myself between tours.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of all ages (some as young as 5), students with special needs, and professional musicians whose anonymity I respect.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My dog just discovered the beach.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Try out different teachers, and find the one that is right for you.
