Teaching Philosophy My goal as a teacher is to help my students play music and achieve their individual goals while getting the best possible sound from the guitar. After a solid musical foundation is established, I have found that technique is learned best when in tandem with repertoire that supports it. While I encourage my students to explore various and any genres of music, I do request that my students are open to learning technique as it equips the student with the skills necessary to tackle any genre of music. Student Materials Materials that are required for a successful experience in both lessons and practice include: An instrument, strings, a foot-stool, music stand, and a metronome. Typically, I will give a short weekly listening to my students as it is my belief as a teacher that exposure the varied music available to guitarists will promote musicality and excite students about potential results of their practice.

What I enjoy most is finding what excites and motivates my students. Once a student finds the thing about the guitar that really interests them, we are able to explore an entire musical world together and this is when students really excel.

Zach is a very versatile and knowledgeable instructor who from my experience can easily gauge where a student needs support. Our sessions were remote and he was still able to tell how I was fretting and how I was picking. Top notch teacher all around.

Zach really brought out my musicality. Makes me think about the melody and gives excellent instruction on how to bring that out. He is eagle eyed when it comes to fingering and technique. And he is very patient during every lesson.

Zach is, of course, an accomplished and skilled guitarist, with years of professional experience. This is only to be expected from a teacher. But Zach also loves to teach. He has an inexhaustible supply of patience for all students. Never will he criticize a student, but only suggest a better approach to the music. He chooses pieces with care, to emphasize a particular area that needs attention. He combines easy-going friendliness with scrupulous attention to the student and the music. Ive been a student of Zachs for over three years now, and I think I made a wonderful choice.

Zach is an amazing instructor—incredibly knowledgable, dedicated, and experienced, and he makes himself available over text and email to answer questions between lessons. He really helped me with breaking down challenges into small, discrete skills. Would absolutely recommend whether youre an absolute beginner or an experienced player looking for more training.

Zachary is an excellent and dedicated guitar teacher and musician. I recently started taking lessons with him and I am very pleased. He is accessible for questions outside of class, explains things very clearly, tailors the lessons to my abilities, and is a nice guy. My highest recommendations!

    Frequently asked questions

I usually like to have a short call before our first lesson to determine your goals for the lessons. During this call, I may recommend a book to purchase if I feel that there is one specific book that will better serve your needs. However, some materials that I give during lessons come from outside sources as well - these are provided by me.

After this, a trial lesson is typically scheduled to give the student what lessons together will be like.

I hold a Bachelors of Music in Music Education, a Bachelors of Music in Music Performance (guitar), and a Masters of Music in Music Performance (guitar). Currently, I am pursuing my doctoral degree in guitar at Johns Hopkins University. Additionally, I am a certified teacher by the Maryland State Department of Education and have passed all background checks.

The single lesson rate is $30/half hour or $55/hour. The monthly rate for 30 minute lessons is $120 for 4 lessons or $150 for 5 lessons (based on $25/lesson). The rate for 60 minute lessons is $220 for 4 lessons or $275 for 5 lessons (based on $40/lesson). I do offer discounts for families as well. There is a $7.50 monthly discount for each student (total $15 discount between 2 students). Services included in my pricing are your lessons, 24/7 email or cell phone availability (I have an open door policy with my students), access to my password protected 'Student Resources' page on my website with online lessons and materials, and electronic bill pay.
