How did you get started teaching?
I was a school teacher for 20 years in the high school and college classroom. I practiced yoga during that time. When I left the traditional classroom, I decided to devote myself to teaching health, yoga and about nutrition and essential oils.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from ages 8 to 89. I have worked with pregnant students, students coming back from surgeries, cancer and facing autoimmune diseases that are chronic such as RA, diabetes, thyroid issues.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I worked with an individual right after Hurricane Irma. She found me on the web. She was skeptical that she could do yoga since she is recovering from knee and back surgery. A few days after our first session, she contacted me and said: "she was quite amazed at how much better she had felt since my yoga session and was excited to be seeing me again."
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Being good at yoga does not make a good teacher. Being good at teaching, listening, observing and helping you feel better is the criteria you should be evaluating. I am close to 60. I cannot do a lot of the yoga moves you see in popular media, but I understand about yoga and healing and if that is what you are looking for, then you should hire me.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are their goals?
What do they believe about their health?
What are they willing to do to reach their goals?
Do they want easy or hard?
Do they want encouragement or pushing or a combination of both?
