Charlie O'Neill Drum Lessons
Hello! My name is Charlie O'Neill, and I am a 20 year old drummer from Chicago. I have been playing drums for nearly my whole life, with formal training for over 10 years. My primary focus is jazz drumset, however I have experience playing a wide array of genres such as rock and funk, as well as classical percussion. I have studied at various music conservatories and programs such as the Merit School of Music, Ravinia Jazz Scholars Program, Jamey Aebersold Jazz Camp, and Depaul University's school of music where I am currently enrolled in the jazz program. I have also performed in many of Chicago's premier music venues like Lincoln Hall, Jazz Showcase, Andy's Jazz Club, Ravinia Festival, and many more. I am accepting students of all skill levels, and am willing to teach any and all styles! I am looking forward not only to sharing my passion and knowledge for music with students, but also learning just as much in the process.
Having worked in all styles of music, I have had to learn how to become comfortable in a wide variety of situations. Because of this experience, I believe that I can give informed instruction to any student, regardless of what it is they hope to get out of drumming. I have always wanted to share my passion with others and give everyone the opportunity to experience the joy that I know music can bring.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will talk to the student and ask them about their previous experience, if any, and what they want to get out of their drum lessons. Then I will have them play for me whatever it is they know, and I will give them notes on how to improve that, as well as some new, more challenging material to practice.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have had over ten years of private instruction on both drum set as well as classical percussion, and am currently enrolled in Depaul University's jazz program. I have studied under great musicians and teachers such as Dana Hall, Rufus Reid, Steve Barnes, and many others.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching last year, and have since grown to love helping students learn and improve musically.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have only worked with beginner drum students, but look forward to instructing students at all levels.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is important to find a teacher you are comfortable with and whose style works with you. Not every great musician has the ability to teach, so studying with a teacher who understands how you learn is paramount in music lessons.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What do I want to get out of drum lessons? What are my strengths and weaknesses? What have I been unable to understand while studying on my own?
