Sare L. says, "Six years ago, I found Professor Lynn on Lessons.com during a time when I was traveling frequently for work and often felt uneasy about my personal safety. As a woman in my forties, I wanted to learn how to protect myself and build confidence while navigating unfamiliar places alone. I originally sought private lessons, but Professor Lynn invited me to join his small class of just four other students at the time. Saying yes to that opportunity was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Professor Lynn is an exceptional teacher who genuinely cares about his students—both inside and outside of the dojo. His guidance, patience, and commitment to helping each student grow have made a lasting impact on me. Training with him has been deeply rewarding, and over the years, I’ve progressed from a complete beginner with a white belt to earning my black belt—a journey I never imagined when I first started. Thanks to Professor Lynn, I not only feel physically stronger and more capable, but I also carry a newfound sense of confidence and calm wherever I go. I am truly grateful for his instruction, mentorship, and the empowering experience he’s helped create. I wholeheartedly recommend Professor Lynn to anyone looking to learn martial arts, gain practical self-defense skills, or simply grow in confidence and self-discipline." Read more

What make me most excited about teaching Martial Arts is watching students grow, reach milestones and break barriers. I love to see the confidence that it instills. In my 31 years in the Martial Arts I've seen some amazing transformations, from students on the spectrum, having temper tantrums who became strong confident adults, to kids so shy they cried when asked to use their voices becoming outspoken, to women growing confident enough to start their own business or chase their political dreams. I am a 7th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo Karate, which is the style I teach. It is a blended art which includes Kung fu, kempo, karate, Jiu j...

Robin K. says, "I'm excited to be writing about my experiences at Rick Wong's Chinese Martial Arts Center. Classes focus on personal improvement in a welcoming and supportive environment. In my adult class, there is a wide range of ages, fitness, experience, and abilities. Students have included extremely fit people in their 20s up to and including elderly or impaired people in their 80s. Rick's strong understanding of the body encourages good practice and minimizes the chance of injury. As a large-ish middle-aged woman, I find the content of classes are challenging but definitely achievable. Rick creates an environment that fosters learning, is non-competitive and non-toxic. Other students are encouraging and supportive. Rick is a kind and patient teacher who works well with students of all levels. More experienced students will recognize and appreciate Rick's depth of knowledge, while beginners can rest assured that they will be welcomed and treated respectfully. Whether you're a complete novice who is curious about Tai Chi or an experienced practitioner, Rick has a lot to offer. " Read more

Your Martial Arts Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

What is mixed martial arts (MMA)?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat spot that incorporates striking, footwork, and grappling techniques from boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and Muay Thai. Many MMA fighters also blend techniques from judo, karate, kung fu, kickboxing, and other martial arts.

Mixed martial arts competitions take place in an octagon-shaped ring, sometimes called a "cage", with fighters competing against others in their weight class. Fighters are free to punch, kick, knee, elbow, slam, and grapple their opponents. However, for safety purposes, biting, eye gouging, head butting, and certain other moves are against the rules.

How much do mixed martial arts classes cost?

Mixed martial arts classes cost $100 to $180+ per month on average, depending on the class age range, number of classes per week, combination of martial arts taught, and the coach's expertise and reputation. MMA gyms are typically more expensive if they have well-known coaches who are UFC champions on staff, with some membership fees reaching $300 per month.

Many MMA gyms offer a 1-day drop-in option for $10 to $20 to give you the chance to attend a class and see if the gym is right for you.

Is mixed martial arts good for self-defense?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is ideal for self-defense training because you'll learn a combination of skills and techniques to help you escape dangerous confrontations without injury. MMA's "no holds barred" style is often considered the closest to real-life fighting when compared to other martial arts.

However, MMA does not teach you techniques like knife defense or how to disarm an opponent with a weapon. MMA training is also geared toward dealing with only one attacker at a time.

What does mixed martial arts training help with?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) training incorporates strikes—including punches, knees, and elbows—short and long-range kicks, groundwork, and grappling. You'll also practice controlled and supervised sparring. This training provides a wide range of benefits:

  • Build your confidence
  • Improve your discipline
  • Get fit and increase your endurance
  • Improve your strength, balance, and flexibility
  • Reduce stress and improve your concentration

Where can I learn mixed martial arts near me?

Follow these tips to find the best mixed martial arts gym near you:

  • Research the instructors' competition record and reputation.
  • Read gym and instructor reviews on Lessons and Google.
  • Confirm the gym offers classes for your experience level.
  • Visit the gym in person to confirm it is clean and well-maintained and the staff is professional.
  • Take advantage of their free one-day pass to take a class and ensure the gym is a good fit for you.
  • Get a copy of the membership contract in writing before making any payments.

What questions should I ask mixed martial arts gyms?

Before deciding on an MMA gym, be sure to ask these questions:

  • Is the gym beginner friendly?
  • What kind of membership contracts do you offer?
  • Do you offer a free trial class or one-day pass?
  • What is your class schedule?
  • How many students do you have?
  • How many students are in a typical class?
  • What is the instructor's competition record?
  • What kind of uniform or clothing is required?
  • Do your students and instructors compete regularly?
  • How often do you clean your mats?

Training at BLKK has been an amazing experience! As a busy mom, training once a week in the dojo has been a great way to have “me time” while juggling a busy schedule. I’ve gained a tremendous amount of self confidence while learning self defense techniques that will empower me in any situation. The workouts are great and I’ve meet lifelong friends. I highly recommend BLKK for anyone seeking martial arts or self defense training, or a just a great workout. I’ve been with Professor Lynn for 6+ years from white to black belt, and I’m looking forward to many more years of training.

I was curious about tai chi, but wasn’t even sure what it was. I had heard that it was good for flexibility, balance, strength and relaxation. With more than a little nervousness and self-consciousness, I attended one of Rick Wong’s beginner classes. I was immediately welcomed into the group. After some stretching and warming up, Rick had us begin with very simple movements that he both demonstrated and explained. Every week we built on what we had practiced, and within a few months, we had learned a complete form. In addition to being a martial arts master, Rick is a practicing physical therapist who understands how the body moves. Not only is Rick a very knowledgeable teacher, he is very patient and kind. He never puts anyone on the spot, and he provides a lot of helpful information, including very useful explanations of the martial arts origins of various movements. Rick has many long-time students whose loyalty is a testament to his teaching ability, friendly demeanor and good humor. I highly recommend Rick Wong’s tai chi classes!
