About

Music learning should be engaging, and fun, and you should be able to see your own progress as you go! I bring decades of experience to the education of each student, whether you are a complete beginner or an advanced player. In each lesson we combine technical work, repertoire (pieces or songs), improvisation, and theory concepts. I also use technology, where appropriate, to help with learning (Piano Maestro, Simple Piano, etc).

I love sharing my passion for music with my students. If you've set aside the time to practice the piano, then you and I have something in common - an interest in/love for music. I enjoy watching students progress and I am always amazed at the musicality inherent in each person.

Frequently asked questions

In the first lesson, we talk about your previous music study (if any), and any goals you might have (pieces you want to learn, etc). Then, we spend some time on technique work (exercises, or scales), on pieces (new ones, if you haven't brought anything), on theory concepts (that we cover in your music), and finally we'll do some structured improvisation using the concepts we've covered in the lesson.

I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Piano Performance from Juilliard, and a Doctorate in Piano Performance from the Eastman School of Music. I have taught piano, ear training, theory, and music history, in a variety of settings/institutions, for twenty-five years. I am currently the head of the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College.

Until Covid-19 restrictions lift, my hourly rate is $40/hour, with $35/forty-five minutes, and $30/thirty minutes.

My parents were music teachers - I started my first piano student when I was twelve years old!

Beginners to advanced students, all ages.
