Connor M. says, "Steve has played a tremendous role in the progress I've made as a guitar player. Lessons with him are enjoyable, rewarding, and low stress. He is a good listener; he pays attention to my playing and my questions, and provides valuable feedback. The work he gives me between lessons is always challenging, but reasonable, keeping me motivated and keeping the momentum going on improving my technique and musicality. He plays beautifully and seems to genuinely enjoy discussing all things related to music and the guitar." Read more

Hank S. says, "I decided to learn how to play piano for the first time at age 24 and Sally has been an excellent first teacher. There are several things that I think she has done well, but I think the most important thing has been that she has helped to foster and inspire my enjoyment of playing piano. Sally obviously loves playing the piano herself and that has definitely passed onto me during our lessons. I started playing piano on a whim several months ago and I'm even more excited now about learning and practicing than I was when I started and I think that speaks a lot to how good Sally has been as a teacher. The other aspect I've really appreciated is that Sally has been very responsive and aware of my goals and has challenged me in exactly the right ways. I feel like I've learned far more than I ever expected to in my first 5 months of playing. There were several times Sally gave me scores to learn that I thought were going to be too challenging for me, when in fact they really pushed me to improve quickly and increased my enjoyment of playing/practicing. Finally, the little things. Sally has been very easy to communicate with and flexible with lessons. We have never had a miscommunication about lesson time/location and she has been very flexible when I haven't been able to do our standard times. Overall, I've really enjoyed my five months learning how to play the piano from Sally and I would 100% recommend her to any other person looking to learn how to play piano for the first time or improve on their existing skills." Your Piano Lessons questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

How much are piano lessons?

Piano lessons cost $40 to $80 per hour, depending on the location, their experience level, and session length. A piano lesson package costs $180 to $350 for five 1-hour lessons. Children's piano lessons and online lessons often cost less than average.

Piano lessons are available for all ages in most cities in the country. Music instructors teach:

  • Music theory
  • Sight-reading
  • Improvisation
  • How to improve playing or technique

At what age should you start piano lessons?

The best age to start piano lessons is 5 to 9 years, though learning how to play the piano doesn't have an age limit. Playing the piano strengthens fine motor skills, increases flexibility, and improves your memory no matter how old you are.

Are piano lessons worth it?

Piano lessons are worth the money and effort invested over time. Playing an instrument can be beneficial for mental health, and cognitive strength. For smaller budgets, book just a few lessons to get the basics down and continue on your own.

How long are piano lessons?

Piano lessons for beginners or children are typically 30 to 45 minutes per session. Intermediate or advanced lessons are 45 to 60+ minutes per session. Most people have 1 to 2 lessons per week.

Can you learn to play piano online?

Yes, you can learn to play piano online through a webcam or virtual tutorials. Search our list of online piano teacher near you to find an instructor. Online piano lessons are often more convenient than in-person lessons and cost 20% less on average.

How do I select a piano teacher?

Start by searching our list of piano teachers, then:

  • Get at least three free estimates to compare.
  • Read reviews on Lessons and Google if possible.
  • Ask for references from current or recent students.
  • Make sure they are kind and personable, especially when with children.
  • Get a written estimate and schedule before the first lesson.
  • Avoid making a large payment up front. Follow a payment plan instead.

After asking questions and browsing reviews, hire the best piano instructor in your area.

What questions should I ask piano instructors?

When hiring piano teachers near you, ask the following questions:

  • How long have you been teaching piano?
  • Do you have a degree in music?
  • What age do you typically teach?
  • What genre of piano do you specialize in?
  • Will you give me a contract or payment arrangement in writing?
  • Will you allow me to choose some or all of the songs we practice?

Ideal instructor in so many way! Able to tailor lessons to my particular needs and tastes (mostly baroque) though he encourages me to push beyond my meager abilities. As an aging baby boomer myself, I am so happy to find someone who has allowed me to accomplish a lifelong dream: to play better than I did when I took lessons as a kid. Joe emphasizes good technique but still makes lessons fun. Definitely 5 stars!

My daughter has been taking piano lessons from Mr. Lewczyk for 4 years now and I would highly recommend him to anyone that would like their child to experience the joy of music. My daughter is by no means a prodigy, but we have continued lessons with Mr. Lewczyk for so long for a number of reasons: 1. He makes it so easy. He comes to our house, I don't have to rush around getting her out the door and fight traffic. He's always on time and if I have a scheduling conflict, he's always flexible. 2. His lessons are affordable. 3. He has a gentle and unique style that doesn't put an enormous amount of pressure on my daughter, allowing her to learn at her own pace. He is always patient and encouraging. 4. I believe exposing my daughter to music, from music theory to the works of great composers, even classic rock, has an enormous benefit in my daughter's brain development. Mr. Lewczyk covers all that ground, but in a very organic, calm and patient style. So, the proof is in the pudding; my daughter is a straight A student, she has a nice peaceful demeanor and she's told me many times that many of the songs she learns are always kind of playing in the background of her mind while she's doing homework or other activities. A couple of years ago Mr. Lewczyk arranged a holiday recital at a senior care facility for his students. While my daughter was nervous to perform, she really wanted to do it, and I could tell it really boosted her confidence afterward. These past 4 years have been well worth it and I'm sure my daughter will look back on this time and be thankful that she had the opportunity to learn the piano while she was young. Thanks Sean!

I was skeptical because i'd never heard of this website, and the prices seemed to good to be true. But I've been paired with an extremely professional, and very real Spanish Tutor who lives in Ecuador. I cannot believe how easy this app is. I'm so excited to get moving along with my spanish improvement journey!

Christine was an absolute pleasure to work with. Her years of music education experience really shines by her ability to gauge what level I was at piano wise as well as what areas I should improve in first. Her instruction was very clear, easy to follow and intuitive. I already signed up for more classes with her!

Sebastian is extremely patient and personable. He really makes a connection with his students so they look forward to their lessons with him, even if piano is not their main focus. We felt lucky to have found him for our son- and he was with us for many years.
