I love teaching music theory along with an instrument because it gives the student a clearer picture of how everything "fits" together and then that "A-ha!" moment arrives on their face and it's like a huge thank you for opening the door to new possibilities for that student.
When I'm faced with a student who comes with challenges, whether they're not super great in school or just can't seem to "fit in", I take care to meet that student on their level, get to know them and help them feel comfortable and build trust as we make the music path successful and enjoyable for them.
Making music, what's not to love? I started singing in church choir when I was about 4 years old. When I was 11, I started taking clarinet lessons and playing in band at school. Christmas 1986, I played my first memorized solo in our church's Christmas program. "O Christmas Tree". After that, doors opened up and I walked through. I went on and sang in my college's chorale, played handbells, worked with voice and piano teachers, played in concert band, co-directed children's choirs, co-directed handbell choirs and eventually landed my dream job of being a Band Director.
What do I love about what I do? There isn't enough space!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We set up a meet n greet time where we get to interview each other. Hiring the right teacher is a delicate process and getting to know personalities is an important step. During that meeting, we also talk about logistical things like scheduling, previous music experience, possible challenges that may come up during a lesson, what does life look like right now and how would practicing fit into that scenario.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As an music educator, I attend as many webinars and in-person conferences as I can manage to keep up with the going trends in the music education world.
