Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the first 10 minutes we do a simple exercise to start stretching fingers, develop strength, independence and calluses. In the next 20 minutes while practicing how to keep a steady rhythm, we learn easy chords (played with one or two fingers) that way it's easier to move from one chord to the other without losing the beat. In two or three months the student it's plain easy pop songs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied for 10 years classical guitar on the national Conservatory of Guatemala, with a major on arranging and composition. I had master classes of jazz guitar in New Orleans with Hank Mackie and Steve Masakowski for over five years. I have been teaching guitar and music theory for 25 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The standard pricing for professional guitar teachers in Arlington Texas is $30 for a half hour. That's the cost for lessons at Music & Arts where I've been teaching for nine years.
How did you get started teaching?
I started as substitute teacher at the Conservatory of music in Guatemala.
After performing internationally for over 20 years, I found that my real passion and skills it's to be a teacher and I've been doing that in Guatemala, New Orleans and Texas for the past 25 years.
What types of students have you worked with?
Beginners, intermediate and some advance in theory and composition.
I had students from the age of 5 to 67 years old.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Uff! So many! To mention some, the last tour of Electric Band with Chick Corea.
And of course my student's recitals which I do twice a year, from solos, duets, classical and jazz/rock ensambles.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
First look at his website, social media's and compare notes, look him up on Google, contact him directly and try to get a first free lesson to understand his system and see if you like it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do you teach basic techniques? What styles will I'll be able to play with this techniques? How soon will I will be playing easy pop songs? How soon will I will be playing a more complex styles like classical or jazz? Do you teach how to read music? Can I learn guitar even if I'm not interested in reading music? What do you recommend to stay engage and continue learning guitar?
