Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My main focus is teaching in a way that will engage the student personally. I try to find out what kind of music and styles they are interested in, and work on teaching them in a way that will guide them toward that style faster.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 8 years of experience playing guitar. I have taken a few years of lessons personally when first starting. I have taken both highschool and college level music history and education classes.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My typical rate is $15 per half hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I had family and friends ask me personally to teach them and I found it really rewarding. I was also asked by my local boys and girls club to set up music lesson plans and group lessons when I used to attend.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a wide variety of students ranging from young to older, and special needs.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My favorite thing to see while teaching is getting to see students exceed the goals I give them after each lesson. Its really rewarding for everyone involved.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice to new students would be not to worry about being too underskilled or "unteachable" to play guitar. With the right mindset and instruction anyone can learn to play an instrument like guitar, and with dedication anyone can excel at it.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think its important to know what kind of music you wish to play, and set realistic goals for yourself. A competent teacher should be able to help you set those goals, but its great to have an idea of what you expect for yourself and for your teacher to help you with. I think its also incredibly important to understand that progress will not happen during lessons, but between lessons. Knowing that you need the discipline to sit down and practice as often as you can will make a difference in the time it takes to learn.
