I have 25 years of experience both as a music educator and working musician. I received both of my degrees from the University of New Orleans and gained the majority of my experience by living and participating in the colorful music scene in New Orleans. Now in San Diego I'm excited to share my passion for music and my diverse experience across many styles of music and guitar playing. I have a broad background, from 1930's gypsy swing, funk, afro-beat, contemporary jazz, and I've even spent time in gigging top-40 wedding bands and can help you learn how to perform. My lessons focus on ear training and technique, learning to recognize and reproduce sounds with your voice and your instrument.
I enjoy teaching and seeing students start to connect concepts to practical exercises and real life facility on their instrument. It's been a joy to see past students go on to their own gigging and teaching careers.
Aaron was motivating and patient as he worked with me on elements of the CAGED system.
Aaron is a passionate and patient teacher. His musical curiosity creates a creative atmosphere, while his persistence for excellence maintains a good pace for progress. He is very knowledgeable and eager to answer questions. He is a challenging and inspiring teacher. It is clear that he enjoys sparking passion into his students and sharing his appreciation of music.
I typically do a quick phone interview about your individual goals followed by a brief assessment of current technique and auditory recognition/reproduction on your instrument and start from there.
I have both Undergraduate and Master's degrees from the University of New Orleans as well as over 20 years of experience playing music professionally in a range of venues from small club and bar dates to concert halls and universitie exhibitions.
Price per lesson depends on commitment but single lessons start at $60/hr.
I started teaching guitar during my undergraduate degree as a way of sharing my passion and cementing in the learning I was experiencing. I went on to grow a student group of 32 weekly lessons as a full time instructor in New Orleans.
I've worked with all ages of students, from 9 years old to 67. I love working with students that are excited about learning the instrument and how to express themselves through music.
I love meeting people that share a passion for music and jamming together. I recently had an amazing experience spending hours with a new friend in San Diego improvising over tunes together. It's such a wonderful thing to have a common language and technical skill set that allows for a musical conversation to happen, and it's something I strive to cultivate in my students as well as myself.
