Your meditation questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.

Meditation classes cost $15 to $30 per person for a group session. One-on-one sessions cost $60 to $150 per hour for a more individualized experience. Some teachers offer online virtual classes for groups or individuals with ongoing monthly plans.

Higher prices apply for supplemental add-ons to enhance meditation, such as aromatherapy or sound baths with Tibetan singing bowls.

Meditation classes typically start with an introductory talk. Then everyone closes their eyes and sits still. Classes can include a simple guided breathing technique to reduce stress and tension. If it's a guided meditation session, then the teacher speaks each instruction for focusing.

Note: The length of the silent pauses during the class will vary depending on the technique and style. Some meditation classes are in complete silence from beginning to end. Afterward, there may be a questions and answer session and light refreshments.

Benefits from going to a mediation class include:

  • Reducing stress and releasing mental tension
  • Increasing self-awareness
  • Enhancing creativity and imagination
  • Promoting mental clarity by focusing on the present moment
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Decreasing anxiety
  • Helping to relieve depression
  • Boosting personal and spiritual growth

Most meditation classes last for 30 to 60 minutes. Longer classes on meditation retreats typically have a short break in between for bathroom trips and stretching your legs.

Do prepare for a meditation class by taking a bathroom break, drinking some water, and doing a few gentle stretches to get into a comfortable sitting posture.

Do not eat a large meal or drink alcohol less than 2 hours before class because these things can make you fall asleep when trying to meditate. Having a lot of caffeine before a meditation class can make it harder to sit still.

Things to bring to a meditation class include:

  • A change of comfortable clothing if you're coming from the office
  • A meditation pillow, yoga mat, or bench to sit on
  • An eye mask if the lighting is distracting
  • A journal and pen to track insights

Tip: Ask the meditation center or teacher beforehand about which items they have available.

The ideal clothing to wear for a meditation class is comfortable clothing that lets you to breathe easily and sit on the floor or stretch a little. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal.

Yoga classes complement meditation classes since the postures prepare the body and mind for meditation. Yoga classes cost $15 to $25 per group class while a private lesson costs $30 to $70 per class. Tai Chi classes also help focus the mind for meditation.

When searching for a nearby meditation class, first decide which type of meditation you are interested in. Then compare class fees and read their reviews on Google and Lessons. After booking, keep a copy of the refund policy and terms and conditions for your records.

I have been looking for an effective trainer for years, and this is one of the rare times I felt a real connection. George was able to assess my fitness level within one session and pushed me to a healthy limit from that point on. We created realistic goals that I am continuing to achieve day in day out. Highly recommend this program to anyone looking to make a positive change in their physical life.

So, I am a RYT-500 whose personal practice hit a roadblock. I felt like I just couldn't find the right balance between my physical and spiritual practice (my spiritual practice is very solid). Quite by 'accident', I came across Yogi Brian's website (and I really don't believe in accidents!). I read all about his practice and I read the reviews. I sent an email and was responded to promptly with a good time to call. After speaking with Brian, I knew I needed to sign up for a private session. I signed up for two hours (I live 1.5 hours away). I just left my session and can I say, this was the BEST, most productive 2 hours EVER! Brian is extremely knowledgable, his instructions are crystal clear and he works with you at your own personal level. What really impressed me is that he had put together, ON PAPER, a specific 2 hour session for me after hearing from me what I needed that he gave to me when I left. My challenges were in arm balances and I had been struggling with some of the asanas for MONTHS. Although I know that asanas are a small part of YOGA, that was what I needed to work on. I not only landed the poses I was looking for, I landed a couple I had never done before. That definitely put the spark back into the physical part of the practice that has been missing for me. I have already signed up for my next session! If you are a seasoned practitioner or someone who is just starting, I can't recommend Brian enough...even if you live farther away, it is most definitely worth the ride. ~Namaste
