Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each class will follow this general framework:
- Full-body Warm up exercises
- Challenging physical Circuit Drill
- Breathing Exercises
- Stance training (sometimes Chinese language practice at the same time or perhaps discussions, etc.)
- Kicking practice (looking at many fine points of physicality, targeting, power, non-telegraphing, relaxing, distance / spacing, timing and more)
- Partner Application Drills
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been studing Martial Arts for over 30 years. I have trained in various styles with a focus on Chinese Martial Arts but I have also trained in other systems including Sanshou/Sanda, Tae Kwon Do, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and Capoiera.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I use a sliding scale for pricing based on how often (frequency) during the week that you want to practice. Rates start at $65 per month for 1-hour per week.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching for the sole purpose of helping develop - with martial arts the only person you compete against is yourself.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students with different physical abilities and challenges. I advocate diversity in my students as we all have may have different backgrounds, but everyone has something to offer.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I made it through another day of life able to teach the art I love.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
You have your own goals, weaknesses and strengths. To best experience the benefits of martial arts make sure you are working with a teacher who understands that when teaching you their art.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Understand why you want to learn a martial arts - is it for your own personal safety or that of someone close to you, is it for health reasons or are you looking for a form of meditation to deal with everyday stress.
When talking to a teacher ask how their art can help you meet your needs and what will they do to help you meet your specific goals.
