About
Hi, I'm Jessica, and I've been teaching yoga for 17 years, offering private, personalized lessons for individuals, pairs, and small groups. I also teach Tai Chi and Qigong. At first, I taught group fitness yoga, corporate yoga, and studio classes, but quickly found that I do not like to leave anyone in a large class behind. This is how I found my niche. I love working with small groups and individuals with specific needs. I believe in using informed compassion and patience as the guiding principles of a yoga practice, and clear communication to assist each client through the transformational experience that is yoga. I primarily teach in English as we, together create a specialized yoga practice, including postures(asana) and breathwork(pranayama) that will help improve your strength, flexibility, balance, clarity, peace, and joy. I call my style Maitri Yoga, which means practicing yoga that is kind and friendly to one's self. Maitri Yoga creates unity of mind and body, which frees your energy for healing and growth. I focus primarily on the fundamentals of creating a solid foundation for any personal home practice or appropriate group yoga class. I provide props to aid in proper alignment and to offer support for restorative poses and breathing exercises. All ages, body sizes and types, and experience levels are welcome.
In 2018 I began teaching Tai Chi as well. This fits well into my practice because it is all slow flow, mindful movement. These practices together can unlock your energy and really balance well together. Both Tai Chi and Yoga can become a moving meditation practice, for health, well-being, flexibility, fitness, balance, and energy!
I enjoy helping others. Yoga and Tai Chi can be transformative practices because they incorporate mind, body, and heart, and I love being a part of that process. There is nothing else I would rather do. Whether I am helping someone learn to relieve their own pain, create a healthier lifestyle, or delve deeper into a personal home practice, I feel I am helping lift that person, and by extension, their family and community. I feel like it is my little way of making the world a better place.
Call me if you're interested, there's no obligation, and I answer any questions you have and give you my class schedule in your area. I have some donation-based classes so it can fit into any budget.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Whether you are interested in group classes or private lessons, the first step is a conversation. I like to talk on the phone, answer any questions you may have, and get a little more information about you and what you are looking for. Please call me at (801)-319-3926. During our call, we can discuss the options that best suit your needs, and work out the details such as location, scheduling and payment options...
and then we meet up for the first session or class. Classes are held at the beach, park, clubhouse or home. Private lessons work like this:
Our first session is usually a little longer than your regular appointment will be as we are still learning to work together. We will go through some breath work and yoga poses so that I can further determine what key components you might need to align your intentions for your yoga practice.
Each time we meet after that, we will build on what we have learned together to create a unique yoga practice for you which will be healthy, sustainable and transformative. I will often give you ideas of things to try at home or little assignments to keep the progress going until we meet again.
Single sessions purchased for an individual, pair or small group, work slightly different. In this situation, I will get specific information about each person ahead of time and create a general plan for a full, pleasant, balanced practice to meet the general needs of the client(s) in one session.

How did you get started teaching?
I started practicing yoga to take better care of myself. As a mother of six small children and a busy lifestyle, I was run down and drained all the time, but I fell in love with yoga in 2004 and eventually started practicing daily. A close friend of mine, the director at my local community fitness center, approached me about being a teacher. She encouraged me to do my teacher training and start working as a yoga instructor.
I thought she was crazy. Yoga was a very personal activity for me, and I couldn't imagine being the teacher. Fortunately, she continued to push me, and I eventually signed up for teacher training. In the summer of 2006 I started my certification, and began to expand my knowlege about yoga. I was required to teach a class and that was it. I was hooked. I immediately knew I had found my calling, and I've been teaching ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
· I have worked with all kinds of students of all ages, ability, and experience levels.
· I have worked with many clients in recovery from addiction, trauma, surgery, illness, depression, and PTSD.
· I have had clients starting to exercise again after neglecting their health.
· I have worked with clients who have been practicing yoga for years looking for a sustainable practice as their body changes or heals from an injury.
· I have many healthy, happy clients, who were seeking to increase the quality and frequency of their practice.
I'd love to talk to you, to see if I may be able to serve you too.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
To celebrate spring, one of my clients had a fun yoga day on the beach with her daughter and grandkids. We had a blast and the kids did awsome. To her surprise, she could keep up with them throughout the lesson!
I also worked with another client in preparation for recovery after a double hip replacement, last year. Because his results were so beneficial, he often reported that his doctors said to keep doing the yoga. His healing was so quick and thourough that six months later he is hunting, surfing and playing on the floor with his 3 year old again.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If you are looking for a down to Earth yoga teacher, who will help you with your very specific needs, and other teachers or studios felt intimidating or unrealistic for you, please contact me and lets talk. If we are a good fit, I would be honored to share in your yoga journey with you, as little or as much as you would like.
