Coach Cato is a Certified USA Boxing Coach with 40 years’ experience in the Martial Arts holding a 3rd Degree Black Belt. He has been a Certified Personal Trainer (with two certifications) at the New York Health and Racquet Club, where he trained various clients in not only the Martial Arts, but also in diet, health, and weight training. He has created his own class in Realistic Self Defense, which has been used to train police officers, women's groups, and health club members. lshmael has taught Cardio Kickboxing, Women's Self Defense and Yoga at both Dolphin Fitness Clubs. He is presently teaching out of John’s Boxing Gym in the Bronx, ten minutes away from Manhattan.

I have been motivating people to reach their fitness goals for decades. I love what I do and it's that love and adherence to discipline dedication and perserverance that I pour into my students and clients.

Sensei lshmael (Ajahni) Cato is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in I.M.A.S (Integrated Martial Arts System) and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Aki Jujitsu and Karate. He has over 30 years of experience in the martial arts. He has been formally studying the Martial Arts since childhood. He started his Martial Arts career at a Neighborhood Community Center in Corona, Queens. Studying Tae Kwon Do and various styles of Kung-Fu and Karate until the age of 17, when he began to study Go-Ju Ryu Karate under world renowned Master Al Gotay at John Jay College and also under Master Joe Mercado at a neighborhood school in Staten Island. During this time, he also studied Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do and a style of Kung Fu founded by Grandmaster Carter Wong. While studying with Master Joe Mercado, he studied Kickboxing and trained with Middleweight Champion Henry Neives. As a teenager lshmael was featured in several televised Kickboxing events hosted by Master Louis Neglia. He later went back to study Tae Kwon Do and began to teach Kickboxing and Jeet Kune Do concepts at a neighborhood school in Staten Island.

In 1991, he was introduced to a style of Aki Jujitsu and Karate, founded by Soke Papasan Canty, Soke Steve Alston and Soke Haisan Kaleak. After 4 years of study, he attained his black belt in the system and started a martial arts school in 1995 with fellow Martial Artist Shihan Eric Auguste at the Sound View Presbyterian Church in the Bronx. After teaching there for 2 years, he entrusted the school to Eric Auguste and began to take up the study of more progressive and innovative martial art styles, thus increasing his knowledge and skill.

lshmael has also trained under the legendary George Washington (who was Joe Louis' training/sparring partner) and other professional trainers at the World Famous Bed-Stuy Boxing Gym in Brooklyn. He studied Wing Chun Kung Fu for 5 years under Sifu Jose Grados. In 1999, he began to study Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Marcos Santos and various instructors at the Renzo Gracie Academy and later on with the world-renowned Team Alliance under Marcelo Garcia and Fabio Clemente. He has been a Yonkers Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) Karate Coach in which he has worked well with young boys and girls. He has been a Certified Personal Trainer (with two certifications) at the New York Health and Racquet Club, where he trained various clients in not only the Martial Arts, but also in diet, health, and weight training. He has created his own class in Realistic Self Defense, which has been used to train police officers, women's groups, and health club members. lshmael has taught Cardio Kickboxing, Women's Self Defense and Yoga at both Dolphin Fitness Clubs and the New York Health and Racquet Club. On February 2009 Ishmael Cato has been promoted to the rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt by Master David Omawale in I.M.A.S.

 Instructor lshmael Cato continues to serve the community and its children. He taught Martial Arts and Violence Prevention with The Leadership Program at IS-230 Junior High School in Jackson Heights and also at Wadleigh High School in Harlem. He also taught M.M.A.-Mixed Martial Arts (Boxing, Kickboxing, and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Submission Wrestling) with the Police Athletic League in Harlem. lshmael is also a co-founder of Y.E.L.A.—Youth Empowerment & Learning through the Arts. He is also the founder and instructor of K.I.K – Kids Inspired by Karate, which is a system of teaching martial arts to preschool/kindergarten children and was being taught at two New York City preschools, and he is presently teaching at John's Boxing Gym in the Bronx.
