About this pro

I am a NYC public school music teacher, with 28 years experience. I teach all ages and abilities. I specialize in prepping students for auditions to Magnet schools, NYC Arts high schools and college auditions.

Music lessons are held in my studio on Saturdays in the Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn. I travel after school to Bay Ridge where I have a number of students I teach in their homes.

I hold a BFA from Long island University in Jazz Performance on Trombone.

I hold a Master of Arts from Brooklyn College Conservatory in Secondary Education.

I love music and I love teaching other people how to play so they can love it to. No matter how young or how old you are, everyone can learn to play an instrument and get enjoyment from the making.

We've been with Mahasin for a few years now. My son wanted to get into a specialized high school for performing arts. My son never had vocal training in his life. With Mahasin's teachings my son got accepted to Brooklyn High School of the Arts. We've been utilizing her services ever since. We're also utilizing her services for my upcoming wedding. My son and his cousin will be training with her to perform a couple of songs for the wedding. She's a fabulous teacher! She works well with my son, who is on the autism spectrum. She is patient, kind and honest. I recommend her highly.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

Students with no experience get right into playing something easy and fun. On guitar it may be a simple 2 chord song. Other instruments a one or two not tune. All students get information on how to take good care of their instrument.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have taught students in beginning and advanced piano, guitar, brass, woodwind and percussion.

I directed a marching band and concert band for twelve years. I currently teach guitar grades 1-8.

Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

I charge $40 per hour if I travel to you. $35 if you come to my studio. I offer a 10% discount if you prepay for 6 lessons.

Student grades 1-8,  I only give half hour lessons. They do not have the attention span for one hour.

How did you get started teaching?

I became a NYC teacher in 1989.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with students from diverse economic and cultural backrounds. If I think I have taught someone to the best of my ability, I have a network of colleagues to recommend to students who wish to go further.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I had the privilege of playing music by Arturo O'Farrill on trombone with the Brooklyn College Conservatory Big Band. ( as an alum)

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Students should be able to say by the end of the first lesson if they want to continue with you. Hitting it off personally with the right teacher is the beginning of building trust. Trusting your teacher is the best way to get started.

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

This ______is the music I'm interested in. Can you help me learn to play it?

The _______looks so hard to play. When will it sound musical?

I really want you to be my teacher, but the price is a little too much. Can we work something out?
