Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
i first ask the student if they have played before. if so i ask them to show me something they have recently been working on to asses their skill and level of playing. i incorporate specified lesson plans for the students needs and ask specifically what they want to acheive. finally regardless of whatever they hope to acheive and how i build their lesson plans i make sure to include theory in all my lesson plans as well as scales to give them a fuller understanding on music and the guitar intself.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
i have been playing guitar for 16 and a half years. i started by playing rock. eventually i went to nassau community college and learned classical guitar, i then transferred to adelphi university and am completeing a bachelors degree in music performance with a concentration in classical guitar and composition. i also write my own singer/songwriter music and perform around long island and nyc. this allows me to go into songwriting with students who are specifically intrested in that.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
my pricing often depends on where i am driving too or if the student is coming to me.
half hour lessons are typically 50 dollars
hour lessons are typically 100 dollars
How did you get started teaching?
i started teaching when i was younger and i had friends who heard me play that wanted to take lessons. after i started college i started working at music schools on the island as well as taking private students who were reffered tome through their friends.
What types of students have you worked with?
i have worked with students ranging between the ages of 5 -65.
i have taught rock, classical, pop, acoustic and songwriting.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
a recent moment i am very fond of is when my 12 year old classical guitar student came back from his level 3 nysmma. to see how happy and accomplished he felt meant the world to me.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
make sure the teacher is qualified. many people call themselves "guitar teachers" but do not know how to read or write music and play by ear. this can lead to horrible technique and result in a student having to unlearn things in the future before leaning something properly. be sure they know theory and can read. the difference between a guitar player and a musician whose main instrument is guitar is the ability to read and write music.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
what do i want to learn?
what got me intrested in guitar?
what got my teacher intrested in music?
how long should i practice?
is this person someone who can get me to where i want to be and feel comfortable with
