About

I have more than 25 years of experience as a professional performing guitarist. I have more than 15 years of experience as a private instructor in addition to teaching at a major university 9Universoty of New Mexico). I have played in some of the most renowned venues in the world and my playing has appeared on grammy nominated recordings. I love teaching and offer students a fun, dynamic and engaging lesson atmosphere without ever losing focus on short, medium and long term goals.

Here's a short biography of my credits:

Calvin has recently relocated to the United States after 20 years of living and working as a professional guitarist in Madrid, Spain. He has performed at some of the most prestigious theatres in the U.S. as well as internationally including RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL and LINCOLN CENTER in New York City, TEATRO NACIONAL in Mexico City and TEATRO MADRID in Spain where his performances have enjoyed enthusiastic critical acclaim (NEW YORK TIMES, VILLAGE VOICE, etc.). Television appearances include THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO, GOOD MORNING AMERICA and THE REGIS AND KATHY LEE SHOW. Most recently, he was asked to collaborate with Spanish pop icon PABLO ALBORAN on the recording of “Terral”, the 5 time platinum selling record which enjoyed 11 straight weeks as Spain’s number 1 selling record. Before moving to New York City, he was working as adjunct porfessor at the University of New Mexico.

In recent years, as I am less inclined to tour and perform on such a rigorous schedule as I have in the past, I’ve shifted my focus and enthusiasm to my students. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than working with students and seeing them progress. I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels. I work with children and recently had the opportunity to direct a youth guitar program at a charter school. I have students who are full-time professional players and are looking to polish their skills or expand their abilities. I also work with elderly people who are guitar enthusiasts.

I enthusiastically recommend Calvin to anyone looking for a flamenco guitar teacher. I spent two years, on and off, studying with him. I had a great time and the instruction I received completely changed my playing. Our work focused on improving technique and strengthening my rhythmic foundations.
I first met Calvin when I took his workshop in New Mexico at the Festival Flamenco de Albuquerque. It was immediately apparent that I had much to learn from him. I continued my studies online via Skype. Calvin was flexible in arranging times with me and always followed up with short webcam videos of the material we covered in class. This helped me compile a small video library to reference whenever necessary.
Not only did Calvin help me become a better guitarist, he also supported my Fulbright fellowship application in 2016 by providing me a letter of recommendation. His insight helped me win this award and move to Spain to continue my studies of flamenco. Since Calvin lived in Madrid for nearly 20 years, he also connected me with artists in Spain to help me carry out my Fulbright project. I’m forever grateful to Calvin for his generosity both inside and outside our classes. Without his input and guidance, I wouldn’t be the guitarist I am today.
    ¡Gracias maestro!

Calvin is a rare combination of excellent musician and incredible teacher. With his guidance I have gained a new approach to playing guitar, practicing, and studying music. I appreciate that his very clear and consistent with the material he is teaching. He is also a kind and generous person and is very patient. But most importantly he has helped me achieve a level of playing I would previously not have thought possible. If you are interested in learning about the wonderful art of flamenco guitar I highly recommend you study with Calvin!

I have studied flamenco guitar on-line with Calvin for several years. He is an excellent teacher with remarkable insight and a coherent plan that will help you improve each week. Calvin uses authentic flamenco repertoire to teach the necessary techniques - picado, alzapúa, pulgar, arpegio, rasqueado and more. If you want to learn how to really play flamenco guitar you wont find a better teacher.

    Frequently asked questions

I first talk with the student in order to get an idea of their goals, their interests and what they are interested in working on. From there I discuss with them a bit of how we might go about acheiving those goals and work out a plan together with them. Within the first few sesssions I like touch base and see how they are doing with the methedology.

I began studying guitar when I was 8 years old and continued with private lessons in different capacities and with different instructors throughout my youth. By the time I was in college I was working professionally and for the second two years of my bachelor degree studies, I was balancing my studies with a demanding tour schedule, performing nationally and internationally. My degree at university was liberal arts and included heavy focus on music classes.
