About Lessons

In general, lessons will be geared toward reaching goals set by YOU. Starting at your first lesson, we will talk about what you want to accomplish; maybe you want to reach a higher level technically, play in a certain style, accompany yourself singing, understand or study music theory, or just learn how to strum your favorite songs... Whatever it may be, we'll work on getting there together!

During the process of reaching your goals, we will also work on you're fundamental knowledge of the guitar and music in general. This will include working on technique, scales, chords, positioning, rhythm, ear training, reading, etc.

Ideally, we would be able to combine these studies with your individual goals; for instance, maybe while learning your favorite song we will study the musical theory involved in it's composition, or learn how to transcribe it (write it down). There are endless possibilities of how your lessons could unfold and I look forward to creatively exploring them with you.

Teaching Style and Philosophy

My lessons are generally relaxed and friendly. I believe the best motivation is the reward of enjoying yourself and being proud of your accomplishments. I strongly believe stress and fear are unnecessary in a learning environment. The only time you'll see me visually annoyed is if I think the student is not trying or is truly ignoring my advice.

The learning process is unquestionably different with every individual, that's why all my lessons are crafted to fit the personal needs of the student.

This is one on one learning, not like regular schooling. I believe institutional style learning is fundamentally flawed (not worthless, but flawed)... This is why I choose to teach privately (rather than at a college or any other institution), so that I can approach the student's needs in a way that the student and I think is best. I don't believe in "cramming"! -we will cover all subjects in a manner that will allow you to soak in the information, not just memorize it for a short period of time.

Music is very hard but can be so much fun, and what's most important to me is that you enjoy yourself! Don't be afraid to ask questions, and remember it's ok to be confused.

Colin Cannon is a renowned guitarist, composer and educator with over 10 years of teaching experience. Based in New York City, Colin is a regular performer in some of the world's most famous jazz venues including the Blue Note Jazz Club and the 55 Bar; and as of 2016 he has released three critically acclaimed albums sold worldwide. In addition to his original music career, Colin is a highly sought after private guitar and music teacher in the NYC area.

Education:
While originally self taught from an early age, Colin went on to receive over a decade of intensive training. During those years he was a student at the world-renowned Eastman School of Music where he was named the “Fred V. Alati Jazz Scholar" and at age 18 was selected by the Berklee College of Music's "World Scholarship Tour". While at Berklee, Colin studied guitar and composition with Tim Miller and Mick Goodrick (teacher of Pat Metheny and John Scofield) among others. Colin graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 2007.

Teaching:
Colin first began teaching guitar while still in high school as a part time job, a job he continued throughout his college years. Since graduating from Berklee in 2007, Colin has been teaching professionally full time and has helped hundreds of students reach their goals. From the advanced student preparing for auditions at some of the world's most prestigious music schools, to the beginner who just wants to play their favorite song, Colin welcomes students of all levels, styles and interests to his lessons.

In addition to his private practice, Colin is also employed and certified by the national tutoring company Take Lessons.
