About

My teaching approach:

I center my teaching approach around the student. Whatever the students goals, desires, strengths, and weaknesses, I incorporate this into what and how I teach that individual.

My influences are:

Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Bill Frisell, Robert Fripp, Maceo Parker, Thelonious Monk, JS Bach, L Shankar

My guitar lessons take place in:

The teacher's studio or the student's home

Guitar Techniques:

Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Open tuning, Fingerstyle, Slide Guitar, Vocal Accompaniment, Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

Two things. First: asking questions. What do you want to be able to do as a guitarist? What skills do you want to develop? What are your goals as a musician? Are you a beginner or have you been playing for a while? Second: observing. What do I hear lacking in your playing, or what is holding you back. It could be technical, maybe learning to use the left hand more efficiently, or rhythmic, or just knowing more about music and the neck layout.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

It varies depending on the students needs and goals. In the early lessons I do my best to determine what you wish to do musically and what approach will get you there quickest. In general, I make a point of having you do some playing in the lesson, and not have it be like a dry lecture. Some of the best things are learned through experience, so I make sure you get experiences that move you toward your goals.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:

I don't care what level the student is at, what I enjoy is teaching a student who is enthusiastic and has a desire to improve. My favourite students are the ones who tell me what they want to get better at, and when I give them a method to get there, they follow it through.

Jimi is a great guy. Has me laughing and learning at the same time. I must say Ive only been going for about a month and so far hes taught me more than Ive ever expected. I played some guitar as a teen and after dropping off for 40-50 years he has me all excited about learning again. Ive only been going for about a month but I plan on continuing forever. Give me a year or so and Ill update the review but right now I have to practice. LOL

Absolutely incredible, effective and highly motivational teachers anyone can ever ask for. Jimi has an impeccable tact for music and is essentially an oracle of wisdom when it comes to asking questions. Ive been taking lessons with Jimi for over a year and a half now and the growth I have experienced as a musician and an overall person can be traced back to Mr. Durso. Cannot recommend enough.
And his prices are super affordable!

Frequently asked questions

First I assess the students goals, and then their strengths and weaknessess, so that I cna determine the best means of helping them achieve their goals.

I've not only taken a lot of lessons and classes with some fantastic teachers, I also have extensive performance, composing, recording, and band-leading experience.
And I have a degree in psychology, for what that's worth.

At my home (or internet) $70/hour, $45/half. Prices are different when I travel.

Everything from beginners to professionals, from as young as 6 to over 70. I've even taught theory, ear-training, and composition to students who don't even play guitar.
