Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first thing that I do is assess what level of achievement the student has already made. Then I have a variety of approaches that take advantage of any strengths the student may already have. For example if a student has an excellent ear I will right away work with gaining mastery of pieces of music that they would like to learn. This can involve transcription of the performance and execution along with the recording.
Of course there are materials that any musician must master including scales and their respective chords, reading, technical exercises geared towards mastery of the neck for string instruments.I also focus on rhythmic skills which includes sense of pulse, mastery of subdivisions including polyrhythmic regroupings and compound subdivisions.
As with any discipline the technical means must be married to the actual musical material so that whatever is studied will be applied to actual musical performances through analysis.
I also focus on ear training as a separate disciplne which includes interval and chord recognition, ability to recognize and transcribe musical phraese of varying lengths etc.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied at U. of Miami Jazz School and went on to graduate from NYU where I finished work on my "Theory of Polyrhythmic Harmony and Motion".I have 35 years of professional experience as a performer, composer and teacher.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I generally charge 50/hr if the student comes to me or 60/hr if I have to travel.
