One of NatyaHasta School of Dance goal is to inspire all the students to develop the passion that I have for performing arts!

I encourage each participant to speak up if they ever feel that something they are learning is either too hard, or unable to comprehend. lessons are taught to suit all kinds of students and their capabilities. If a student feels that something is too hard, he or she is welcome to ask for help, ask to be spotted, or ask to be shown a modified position to progress properly. I am here to provide help whenever needed and I always encourage feedback through a telephone conversation.NHSD aims to provide a perfect basic dance foundation, grooming for stage performances, dance graduation repertoire, competitions as well as dance theory is given. Please know that students are always welcome to talk to their teacher as this helps them get the most out of their experience with NHSD

I, Phane Jayanthi Sen is the founder and artistic director of the NatyaHasta school of Dance, established in 2003 in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. NHSD extends its support to the disabled, homeless, senior citizens or for any kind of social and community cause. I also run Raag Malika School of Music (Teaching Carnatic Sangeetam, Old Bollywood Songs, Bhajans, and Slokas) NHSD is actively involved in artistic exploration, collaboration with western dancers and propagation of Indian culture and traditions.

Phane J. Sen has received many distinguished awards and citations in recognition for her contribution to arts. She was awarded a scholarship from the Ministry of Human Resources Development for Bharata Natyam. She’s been conferred with titles of “Shringarmani” an award is given for artistic excellence at Kal Ke Kalakaar, Mumbai 1988, and “Natya Mayuri” Rajahmundry, 1991, Andhra Pradesh, India

She is an ‘A’ grade Bharatanatyam dance artist of Doordarshan (National Television Channel, India)

Phane J. Sen is the member of International Dance Council - CID, UNESCO, Paris, France, and member of The Ohio Arts Council, USA.

Research explorations:

In 2000, Phane Sen presented a research paper on the topic “Dance/movement

Therapy” at The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) at Antioch University New England, New Hampshire, USA. The research paper defines the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive and physical integration of an individual.

Recognitions, Performances, and Workshops:

Phane Sen has Performed, conducted Workshops and taught Master Dance classes in several national and International festivals, she has shared the stage with many stalwarts:

• 1984 - Phane had an honor, to perform in BODH GAYA, Bihar, India,

• 1986 - Phane was invited by Bihar Tourism Department India, to perform at Rajgir Mahotsav Dance Festival.

• 1987 - Festival of Centre for Cultural Resources and Training, NEW DELHI, India.

• 2012 - Phane Jayanthi Sen and her students were invited to perform before 800 Senior Citizens of Maple Knoll Village, a non-profit continuing care retirement community in Springfield, Ohio,

• Phane chose unique dance pieces, choreographed and prepared NatyaHasta students who participated in 2012 World Choir Games and performed at Duke Energy

Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, before a packed house of 1100 hundred guests; received the standing ovation! An incredible night to remember!

2013 - Phane J Sen was invited to perform at the opening ceremony of UDBHAV INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL, Gwalior, India.

§ Invited to sit on the panel of judges for the competitive dance portion of the festival.

2012, 2013 & 2016 at the Encore Talent Productions, Inc. - Natya Hasta School of Dance Students have received high honors in a competitive selection of choreography and music and bagged TWO 1st (First) Prizes

2013 - Phane’s choreography to the unique song was the factor for selection by the RAD FEST, Midwest Regional Alternative Dance Festival, showcased during the SPRING FESTIVAL in Kalamazoo, MI. The USA.

2014 - INDIAN CULTURAL CENTER - EMBASSY OF INDIA, Budapest, HUNGARY.

2014 - Performed, Lecture/Demo and master’s Class at 38th World Congress on Dance Research at the Chiba Convention Bureau and International Center, Tokyo, Japan.

Festival, October 24 and 25, for Ohio Dance Festival Informal showing; hosted by Ohio University, School of Dance Film and Theater Division of Dance, Athens, OH.

§ Performed an Opening dance “Dance Travels” at Vibrancy 2015 - Choreographed solo dance routine presented in an oriental modern move - collaborating with Balinese dancer & concluding in duet, performing Indian classical fusing with Balinese dance.

I like to dance because dance is the most effective spiritual technology. Dancing releases me from my head and gets me into my body. My experience of the world becomes one where I am no longer separate from anything or anyone around me. It's just a form of oneness.

I like the social experience through dance. I like the creativity and expression.

Dance has a lot to teach me about life, too. It teaches me how to respond to changing circumstances gracefully and creatively, without freaking out. It is the quintessential going with the flow. It teaches me confidence. There's a lot to like about dance. It is incredibly spiritual. It teaches me empathy and intuition. Good for heart and soul and body and psychology. It is also, a medium to keep the mind active as you age - part of geriatric longevity and quality of life treatments.

    Ms. Sen has extensive experience with South Indian classical dances (both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam) and her track record of teaching and disseminating them to successive generations of students. Ms. Sen has consistently choreographed and presented novel dance routines in the classical dance artforms that have been performed by herself as well as her students on stages across the world. With an academic background that gives her a sound understanding of the history and theory of dance, Ms. Sen has also branched into developing routines that are a fusion of the classical dances and more contemporary influences. These innovations allow her to keep her choreographies fresh and relevant to newer generations of students.
    In summary, Ms. Sen has a solid foundation in the history and theory of South Indian classical dances and has developed a track record of using this background to choreograph multiple new routines that have helped preserve the history of the artform while passing it on to students in fresh and original ways.     My teacher Phane J. Sen is a master teacher of the Indian Classical Dances Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam in Ohio. As such she has faced several unique challenges in the endeavor to teach American students a classical dance from India. One of the most impressive things about Phane is the gusto with which she has attacked issues such as language barriers, pre-conceived notions, prior dance training and the logistics of scheduling lessons for a wide range of students- from grade school to adult- that encompass enough time to adequately teach both theory and practical skills.
    Primary among these challenges is, of course, language. The spoken language of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music is Sanskrit, which the clear majority of Phanes students have never heard spoken before, little say speak or understand themselves. This provided a challenge to the teaching of Bharatanatyam hand gestures- each individual gesture assignable to several different meanings. The lessons of these hand gestures are of course recited in Sanskrit, and Phane realized quickly her English-speaking students were floundering with their memorization of the lesson because they had no meaning, no context for the words.
    So Phane created a mini-dictionary in English and divided the lessons to aid her students memorization process. Once the students understand the base names and meaning of the gestures, she goes on to teach the recitation.
    There is also no tradition of writing lessons or recording lessons in Bharatanatyam. The primary written text is a central, and ancient discourse called the Natya Shastra, which encompasses the performing arts. To help her students accustomed to curriculums oriented in writing, Phane has developed novel methods using both written diagrams and digital recording to help English speaking students progress through lessons while mastering the salient points of the lesson.
    These are few examples of the adjustments and innovations Phane has developed to effectively bring a long-standing classical dance to a body of students with likely little knowledge or background- artistically or culturally.

    The most important aspect I work with a new student is safe and positive progression, sequencing and structure of Dance Activities. Attention towards specific needs (age and ability/disability) and psychological aspects of dance practice. I help and guide a new student to define the new movement!

    Under my guidance and training each student develops a lifelong work ethic that emphasizes a commitment to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of their lives.
