My teaching approach:

I customize my lessons for each student to ensure proper technique is learned, and so that the student enjoys themselves. I teach primarily classical guitar/fingerstyle, but can also teach electric guitar (rock, metal, etc.). The equipment I use includes: a non-amplified classical guitar, a piano keyboard for accompaniment, sometimes a violin, and a small home recording setup which can be used to analyze playing.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:

For the introductory lesson I start by asking the student what type of music they would like to learn to play and how long they have been playing. Then to assess their skills I have them play some simple scales and exercises, and increase in difficulty until I see the student has reached the limit of their current playing level. From there I have them begin at a certain point in the lesson plan, as determined by their assessed playing level.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:

A typical lesson includes a run through some exercises of varying difficulty to enhance finger strength and dexterity, then some scales (major, minor, harmonic, melodic, etc.). After that we move onto working on the style of music as chosen by the student, or work on a song. If time permits I usually like to practice improvisation as well.
