I spent 20 years working professionally as an Actor, Director, Designer, and Union Stagehand. I have worked with some of the best educators, directors and actors in the Southeast. I will always do theatre and film for as long as I live. However, I'm a full-time single father and the entertainment world's schedule is not conducive to raising a child on your own. I discovered yoga 4 years ago and it changed my life, I grew a desire to help people heal and find purpose in life just as I have. Yoga lead me to Massage and I have taken the same dedication I have to my art and brought it to my skill as a therapist and instructor. The passion for the...

My name is Celeste Smith, of Celestial Yoga 1. I became certified in hot yoga in August, 2015. I am a breast cancer survivor (7/2014) and after treatment I was too exhausted from chemo and radiation to resume working out 6-7 days a week before cancer. I chose hot yoga in order to assist my body in removing the toxins. Little did I know that I would fall in love with what seems to be the most difficult style of yoga created. I became a yoga teacher to help others work on their fitness goals. I am also studying to become a certified yoga therapist for those of use that want to manage chronic pain and not mask it when there is nothing else the t...

My natural ability is to help others. Combine that with 22 years of professional work experience and an MBA, teaching has become my career of choice. Within those 22 years, I've been running a nonprofit that assists individuals with special needs and their families. Personally, I have 3 children, ranging from elementary school to high school. Watching a young mind develop and grow is remarkable and a journey I love to be a part of with the student.

Your Yoga Classes questions, answered

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Lessons.com.

How much do yoga classes cost?

Single group sessions at yoga studios cost $15 to $20 on average. For private yoga training, you will likely spend between $30 and $70 on each lesson. Yoga classes mostly take place in a group setting, and the price per class depends on the location, yoga teacher’s knowledge and experience, and years of teaching.

How long is a yoga class?

On average, a yoga class is 75 to 90 minutes long. Many instructors say 90 minutes is simply how long it takes to pace through all the sacred yoga asanas, but a new shorter 60 minute class is quickly becoming popular with students.

What to wear to yoga class?

Most women prefer to wear tank tops or a sports bra that's made of a cotton and lycra (spandex) blend when they do yoga. Loose tee shirts and underwire bras are usually a no-no because they have a tendency to get in the way of movement.

For the bottoms, most women prefer to wear tights. These comfortable and stretchable pants will provide you with a full range of movement and allow your instructor to check your alignment. For slower-paced classes, you may be able to pull off wearing long skirts or stretchable harlem pants.

What to bring to yoga class?

Although many necessities are usually provided for you, there are a few things you may still want to bring yourself.

Here's what to bring to yoga class:

  1. Comfortable yoga attire
  2. Water bottle
  3. Hand towel
  4. Yoga mat
  5. Change of clothes
  6. Post-yoga snack

How often should you do yoga?

For those who are already quite active, doing yoga at least once or twice per week is recommended. For experienced practitioners, doing yoga every day is not uncommon. However, if you begin to be sore, consider taking a day or two off. Even if you only do you for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of the practice.

How long does it take to get good at yoga?

There are many beginner yoga poses and sequences that you can get good at in your first yoga class. On a more spiritual level, it may take a lifetime to find the union between mind, body and spirit. You should expect to practice regularly for about six months before you feel confident that you can perform fundamental poses steadily and with some degree of proper form.

Reviews for Birmingham yoga studios

Recent success stories from people in the Birmingham area.
Carolyn R.
Agoge is a great gym! It is intelligently laid out to provide ample space for a variety of training options. There is a rig, ropes for climbing, plus your usual suspects expected in any well equipped strength gym, racks, good quality plates (and plenty of them), dumb bells, etc. It is the additional hard-core strongman equipment, as well as Dave's expert coaching and obvious passion for safe progressive training that really sets this gym apart though. People brand new to exercise, crossfit athletes, power lifters, novice lifters, and folks seeking expert training and fitness will find a home at Agoge.
