Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Before class, I would ask if there are any injuries, physical issues they find as a barrier to practicing yoga & even daily life, what draws them to a practice of yoga, and what may be daunting to them, including financials because we are only donation based at this time.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
With a 10+ background in project management & as many years of teaching yoga, I use my education MBA from Tulane University, Yoga Instructor Certification from Down Under Yoga, and PMI Certification, in sharing my knowledge by helping one to access their goals.
Student of yoga since 2006, and will be forever! At the very beginning, discovering yoga eliminated my terrible tension headaches. Through the years, knowledgeable teachers helped me learn how to adjust posturing to where I can function normally, even with my 7th cervical spine 25% out of place (neck vertebrae) with arthritic bone spurs. Recovering from postpartum anxiety is still a challenge for me; I still have to remind myself take time daily for self-care. Most of my learning has been in Iyengar, which has a stron emphasis on taking your time to get the pose intentions right for the benefits of the pose, instead of going through the movements just for excercise. 14 years of learning has me able to see someone who says "I just can't do this" and explore if this really is the case. I am happy to show these students that they, in fact, can.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Donation based until incorporation approved, $15 per virtual class, $25 in-person group, $75 total for customized personal or couple's class.
How did you get started teaching?
I knew it was a long-term plan for me to end up teaching yoga, so I started instructing back in 2010 with private or small groups of friends at my house or thiers. My passion and understanding about the benefits of yoga has been my best draw for those who never thought it would fit thier personality.
What types of students have you worked with?
Post Natal with children in attendance, prenatal, spine, youth workplace injured, sports injured, mystery injuried, and martial arts students looking to enhance thier life or hobbies to where they can do more than they thought they could and do what they know they can.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Sometimes my less-than two year old watches me teach a class and just the other day I said we were going to do so with Ms. X and Baby Y (he loves Baby Y) with possibly Mr. X making an appearance. (Mr. X asked my toddler if he could do something, toddler did it, and I said yes! That's Malasana!) He got excited and wanted to show me how to do yoga: Downward Dog, Flip Dog, Up Dog, and Virasana. Showed him then how to do badhakonasana. To my surprise, at swim lessons two days later when the teacher asked him to sit, he did so in classic badhakonasana!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Know that even the best yogis have their off days. Please tell me if any pose hurts beyond a streatch or strength-building. Give yourself the space to know that most will never achieve the perfect pose. Come out of the pose and rest until we can address what is not helping your well-being.
Be truthful. It is best to lay it all out and not feel like you are an anomoly with tons of things going on. Half the time, I ask if there are any issues I should know about, then many lessons in, I find they have scholiosis. Seriously, its been half the time. Or they have a past injury that doesn't hurt the now, but we need to pay attention to so they do not hurt again, in class or everyday life.
Be yourself. I'm aging, so I have a TON of things going on, about 3 different every day. To help those with issues gives me pleasure to do some research, maybe consult some master teacher, and then design a class catered to you. You and everyone else in class at the same time!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Are your goals flexibility, post pysical therepy, looking like the typical yoga teacher, movement, or inward knowledge how to get yourself to a higher level of sports/dance/mental concentration?
Do you have a usual mood that is a bit off from what you expect?
What do you think caused your new/healed injury?
What may be offensive to your beliefs or doubts why something will heal? Would you think science and medicine would be a good topic at the beginning of class?
