What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The key element for a successful language program is assessing the student's language skills. We start our programs by providing all our students with a placement test. An introductory lesson is essential in determining the student's learning style and level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have high degrees in Applied Linguistics, Psychology and Philology.
How did you get started teaching?
I started 19 years ago as a volunteer in a literacy program for adults who didn't know how to read and write. The time I saw a person reading her name for the first time is one of the most memorable moments of my life.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages and levels but I definetily have more expereince working with adults.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Please make sure the person you are hiring knows exactly what he or she is doing. Learning a language is completely different than learning anything else since the teaching tool is the language itself. There are many language teachers who are 'fun' and can entertain you very well but after months or even years you still struggling to have a basic conversation with a native speaker. Spanish is one of the fastest language on Earth and developing listening comprehension skills is very challenging. Ask your teacher if they have experience teaching listening comprehension skills.
