Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to demonstrate the styles and songs I use to teach beginners in order to get a feel for what they are interested in. I believe it's important to enjoy the material you start learning. It is important to learn to be musical from the beginning, not just going through the motions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have played guitar, bass, piano, and have been singing for 30 years. I have performed with 100's of bands and have recording experience. I teach at a midtown guitar school on 38th street in Manhattan. I have a studio space available in midtown and Sunnyside Queens.
I also teach using a music software program to help students record and produce their own songs.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $60 for a 1 hour lesson.
How did you get started teaching?
I started learning to play music at the age of 8 and by high school had determined that it was very fulfilling for me to help and colloborate with friends who were beginning to play music and forming bands.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught absolute beginners, intermediate players, and also have helped some seasoned professionals on a few occasions as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I play in a weekend band that plays around the NY tri-state area. Last month Danny Devito was in attendance at one of the events and I got to meet him!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise that the student should be able to determine if they are benefiting from their new instructor after at least 2 or 3 lessons. This should be enough time to get a feeling if the teacher and student are a good match.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer here, but it helps if the student can talk a little bit about why they have decided to begin taking music lessons.
