About

My teaching approach: Most of our students are beginners or intermediate players who want to learn their favorite songs for a special event, the stage or for their own enjoyment. My personal teaching style is easy going and medium paced. Other teachers at THe Unicorn are also patient and work hard to make you feel comfortable. We provide most of the music for students unless they have something specific that they want to focus on. My influences are: Jimmy Page, Joni Mitchell, Liz Phair, James Taylor, Angus Young, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s. My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio or the student's home, I can also offer Skype or FaceTime lessons Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours: The Unicorn is open 7 days a week from 10 am - about 7 pm by appointment or by chance Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Reggae, Gospel, Finger picking, Pop, Rock, Folk styles Performance, Improvisation, Jamming Skills, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Recording and Production, Guidance In Equipment Selection Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: The introductory lesson is about determining goals and skill level. We will typically ask a guitarist their level of ability and have them show us an example of something they're working on. If there is no example, we will provide some songs to play. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: Guitar lessons with The Unicorn begin with determining goals and then creating a lesson plan that will focus on accomplishing those goals. There are also exercises, some light homework assignments and we offer help with selecting instruments or changing strings if necessary. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: A person who is interested in learning to play guitar or in improving the skills that they've already acquired. Pop and rock genres are our favorite to work with.

Frequently asked questions

I work with any student who seems serious and passionate about learning or advancing their guitar skills, regardless of age, ability or other interests. I love newbies!

I've been playing guitar since I was just a kid and have been playing now for 25 years. I've been a professional touring musician with many festival, radio, film and TV credits since 2001 and have been teaching New York City and beyond since 2010. In 2015, I opened up my own music school and theater in downtown Manhattan. Some of my clients include Google, the New York Public Library, after school programs at public schools all across New York City and literally hundreds of private students in the tri-state area. I traveled and toured for many years and then I got engaged. I was looking for work closer to home so I could spend more time with my husband to be. I fell into teaching by starting with one student. Before I knew it, I had 40.

I've worked with every kind of student--kids (age 5 and up), adults (all ages, my oldest student was 86!). I've worked with beginners, intermediate and advanced musicians. I've worked with people of all backgrounds and experience. I even worked with babies, playing for them though, not teaching them :).

Someone once hired me to pretend to be a street musician and play their favorite song as they proposed to their partner. Google hired me to teach 40 technicians to play the ukulele. I'm working with a 4 year old boy to teach him to play the ukulele. And a 72 year old who always wanted to learn to play guitar started taking lessons with me. She's wonderful!

Google them--you can learn a lot about them that way and see if you think you'll be compatible.

For starters, they should have a guitar. If they don't have one, they may ask their teacher to help them buy the right guitar. The right guitar is one that is your size and in your price range. (Yes, guitars come in different sizes!) They may also want to confirm that they'll have the time to commit to lessons and oracticing. Playing guitar is time consuming and takes effort and dedication. If you don't have a lot of time, I suggest starting with a ukulele. But even playing the ukulele takes some practice, too.
